What is the Data Engineer role?

Sitting within the Digital Team as a Data Engineer, you'll be responsible for the design, development and maintenance of data pipelines. Currently the product portfolio consists of a high traffic webapp (accessed by over 3 million people in Australia each year) plus a series of smaller applications helping people navigate a tough time or a rough patch.

You'll be hands on and working with other business units including Marketing, Research, Communications, Fundraising and the broader digital team to help understand user behaviour, evaluate performance and measure the success of their digital products.

Day to day you might be:

  • Review and extend the Data Platform (primarily on AWS Redshift)
  • Grow and extend the Data Warehouse which analyses data captured about users, products and services.
  • Design and build pipelines to access relevant data from across the organisation and aggregate it into the Data Warehouse, including setting up data integrations using Stitch.
  • Help define standards and best practices for how data capabilities are built across the organisation.
  • Contribute to improving data literacy levels in organisation through communication and education.
  • Support Product Managers understand and leverage data and analytics, producing insights and driving strategic decision making.

About you:

You’ll be up to date with Data Engineering concepts and trends and always looking to find innovative ways of solving problems. Working closely with business leaders, program managers, developers, and end users, you’ll be able to help shape the technical data strategy within the organisation and help them make data driven decisions.

Requirements:

  • A strong understanding of SQL and a background ideally with Python or R.
  • A solid understanding of ETL processes and data architecture.
  • A background setting up data pipelines and working with data at a medium to large scale.
  • Experience with data warehouses and setting up cloud database, storage and compute services.
