Background

The Arid Lands Environment Centre has been contracted by Desert Knowledge Australia to lead the rollout of a community solar energy project within a broader Alice Springs solar development project. This aims to resolve renewable energy barriers on the Alice Springs grid to enable 50% renewable energy penetration by 2030. ALEC’s community project aims to increase the amount of renewable energy uptake by households and small businesses (particularly batteries), and optimize its integration into the power network through trials of a virtual power plant (VPP).

Timeline and remuneration

This 0.6FTE position must commence in Alice Springs no later than 30 September 2020 and is funded until 30 June 2022. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience ranging from $95K-$110K pro rata with 3 months’ probation. This position reports directly to the ALEC CEO and has regular reporting obligations to Desert Knowledge Australia. 

Responsibilities

  1. Lead the recruitment and management of 50 Alice Springs households to participate in renewable energy trials;
  2. Coordinate the rollout of renewable energy technologies to those households;
  3. Manage the delivery of a community engagement strategy;
  4. Manage the delivery of two community studies by contractors;
  5. Manage a large budget across a multi-year timeframe;
  6. Write and review project documentation and reporting obligations;
  7. Manage a diverse stakeholder network;
  8. Meet firm project milestones, deliverables and deadlines;
  9. Track and update management plans as required – risk, community engagement, knowledge sharing and IP;
  10. Undertake roles and responsibilities autonomously; and
  11. Regular community engagement and public speaking events.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Previous experience in managing Australian Government or Territory Government funded projects;
  2. A thorough understanding of Australia’s current energy environment;
  3. Extensive experience implementing and managing project plans including budgets;
  4. Experience coordinating and managing staff;
  5. Previous experience working in large multi-disciplined projects that include diverse industries and sectors – government, utilities, university and private businesses;
  6. Extensive experience in managing clients and stakeholder’s relationships;
  7. Experience managing a large portfolio of contractors; and
  8. Experience in participating in tender processes i.e. design, submission and review.

Desirable

  1. A project management, business or engineering qualifications
  2. Senior management experience
