Arid Edge Environmental Services is seeking an environmentally motivated individual to provide landscape design consulting services and manage diverse projects within a dynamic team. Arid Edge Environmental Services is an environmental services social enterprise providing design, landscaping, consulting and project management services to clients across urban, remote and indigenous communities in central Australia.

Arid Edge is an initiative of the Arid Lands Environment Centre Inc, all profits go to the Arid Lands Environment Centre.

This position will be responsible for delivering Arid Edge’s existing projects in the area of landscape design, developing a portfolio of commercial customers seeking further consulting services in this area, and assisting in managing day to day operations of Arid Edge’s operations and diverse team of designers, horticulturalists, rangers and community development workers.

This is a twelve month fixed term position. Renewal of contract will depend on the candidate securing sufficient fee-for service contracts to support the on going running costs associated with this position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide landscape design and drafting services to a wide range of customers, both in Alice Springs and in remote locations as needed. Vectorworks experience preferred.
  • Provide professional advice and consulting services to a wide range of customers, both in Alice Springs and in remote locations as needed, in the areas such community master planning, natural area restoration planning, climate change planning, water efficiency, waste management solutions and related areas.
  • Assist AEES Manager in day to day management of the business operations and staff, in the capacity of an Assistant Manager. This may include business management, administration tasks, logistics and direct management of casual/subcontractor designer/drafters as required.
  • Assist AEES Manager to secure further tenders, contracts and grant funding through client networking, lead development, quoting, grant application writing and other project development activities. In particular this position will lead on commercial quoting and tender writing, with assistance from the AEES Manager and Landscaping Supervisor.
  • Manage contract relationships with clients where designated as the project lead, including taking the lead role in all regular communications, liaison and reporting.
  • Contribute to a safe, efficient and professional work team while on all site while you are employed by ALEC.

Essential Selection criteria

  • Qualifications in a relevant area of Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Landscape Design or similar.
  • Minimum 3-5 years experience working in either Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Landscape Design or similar.
  • Proven experience in delivering on design, drafting, specifying and documentation associated with Landscape Design/Architecture projects, to a high level.
  • Strong project management skills including planning, contract negotiations, client relations quality control, cost control, sub-contractor management, meeting deliverables and risk management.
  • Experience in managing a small enterprise, including administration, logistics, client relations, scheduling, quality control and compliance.
  • A current manual drivers licence and an appropriate level of health and fitness to meet the rigours of remote field work including driving long distances in a 4WD vehicle, changing tyres and lifting up to 20kg.
  • A Construction Safety Induction Card (White Card) and NT Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card) or the willingness to secure these.

Desirable

  • Experience using Vectorworks Landmark software preferred.
  • Experience working with indigenous people and in indigenous communities is highly desirable.
  • Experience in client consultation and participatory community consultation methods is desirable, particularly in a cross-cultural setting.
  • Knowledge/qualifications or professional experience in any of the areas of: landscape construction, horticulture, conservation/land management, urban sustainability, food security, permaculture, community development, climate change adaptation or cross cultural work in indigenous communities
  • Experience working in and designing for remote central Australia, or similar remote locations.
  • Experience in GIS mapping in either Vectorworks or QGIS.
  • Experience in graphic design software and document production.
  • Any of the following licences or competencies:
    • First Aid Training
    • 4WD vehicle operations/recovery
