Background

The Arid Lands Environment Centre is central Australia’s own environmental organisation. ALEC’s vision is for ‘healthy futures for arid lands and people’. ALEC works to protect the environment and support healthy, happy and resilient communities. As part of this work, ALEC established the Alice Springs Community Garden in 2010 and has been successful in securing a grant to support the development of a Community Garden Network through establishing a second community garden in Gillen at Centralian Middle School.

Job Purpose:

This job exists to:

  • Facilitate the establishment of a Community Garden at Centralian Middle School and support management and establishment of other community gardens

Key Responsibilities

Work with and under guidance of the ALEC CEO and Alice Springs Community Garden Management Committee to:

  • Facilitate the establishment of the Gillen (Centralian Middle School) community garden; and any other opportunities to establish other gardens in the region that emerge
  • Community engagement and development - engage and support interested individuals and organisations to get involved in the garden
  • Work with the school, utilities, local council and other stakeholders to develop the garden
  • Organise events and workshops at the Garden
  • Facilitate the development of an Alice Springs Community Garden Network
  • Pursue donations, sponsorship and in kind support from businesses and community organisations to support the development of the garden
  • Maintain these supportive relationships
  • Identify and apply for sources of ongoing funding to support the Garden
  • Perform work to achieve the project plan to establish this garden and develop a Community Garden Network
  • Maintain and update website and social media pages
  • Regular engagement with local media
  • Regular contribution to ALEC member and supporter communications
  • Reporting as required

Knowledge/Experience

Essential:

  • Gardening knowledge and skills
  • Project management experience
  • Community engagement and development experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Computer literacy - MS Office, Google Suite
  • Web content management and social media savvy
  • A current driver’s license

Desirable:

  • Experience with establishing community gardens
  • Understanding of Alice Springs community
  • Relevant qualifications
  • Personal vehicle
