Category C Animal Ethics Committee Member - Animal Welfare (voluntary)

Griffith University

The Griffith University Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) is seeking to recruit additional Category C (Animal Welfare) members. The Griffith University Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) advises the University on ethical standards for animals used in research and teaching. The AEC reviews all applications for research involving animals, with the aim of ensuring that the scientific use of animals is justified, provides for the welfare of those animals and incorporates the principles of Replacement, Reduction and Refinement. The Committee is dedicated to ensuring that all research meets the requirements of the Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes 8th Edition (2013).

A Category C member is defined as: a person with demonstrable commitment to, and established experience in, furthering the welfare of animals, who is not employed by or otherwise associated with the University, and who is not involved in the care and use of animals for scientific purposes. Veterinarians with specific animal welfare interest and experience may meet the requirements of this category. While not representing an animal welfare organisation, the person should, where possible, be selected on the basis of active membership of, and endorsement by, such an organisation.

This is a volunteer position, however, provides an opportunity to learn about, and contribute to important research projects. Griffith University is committed to providing training opportunities to Committee members, and some travel expenses, conference attendance, and networking opportunities will be provided. Members must have good computer literacy, be able to read and access documents online, and be willing to raise questions and contribute their opinions during meetings. The Committee meets 10 times annually at venues at the Nathan and Gold Coast campuses (lunch provided), and/or by videoconference when required.

Persons who are interested in finding out more about the role can contact Dr Monica Naughtin, Animal Ethics Coordinator on 07 3735 6618 or [email protected], using the subject line: Category C Animal Ethics Committee Member - Animal Welfare enquiry via EthicalJobs.
