Animals Australia works tirelessly to protect the most abused and defenceless animals in our society. Our award-winning national campaigns and unique investigative work have awakened millions to the suffering of animals in factory farms, the live animal export trade and the greyhound racing industry, while forcing unprecedented industry and government reform. Each victory for animals is underpinned by a strong and proactive supporter base.

About the position

Animals Australia is seeking expressions of interest from appropriately skilled and experienced individuals keen to join our Board of Directors to help guide the organisation to achieve our vision of a world where kindness, compassion and respect extend to all living beings. Each of our Board members play an integral role in applying their technical expertise to govern the organisation through robust consideration, discussion, analysis and decision-making on key strategic issues.

About you

With five existing highly skilled, experienced and passionate Board Directors, we are looking for one-two additional members with skills (at a senior/advanced level) in any of the following areas:

  • Animal/ environmental science (e.g. behavioural, biological, agricultural etc)
  • Legal
  • Risk management/Compliance
  • Not-For-Profit fundraising
  • Marketing
  • Media
  • IT Governance
  • Accounting/Finance

Additional weight will be given to individuals with a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of, and commitment to, Animals Australia’s vision, objectives and values.

Position Requirements

  • Initially commit to a 3-year term (note: a Board Director can be re-nominated/ elected for further terms)
  • Attend (either in-person or virtually) at least 4 Board meetings each year. Note that attending in-person is preferred, wherever possible.
  • Be available as needed for out of sessions discussions/ approvals
  • Dedicate appropriate time to prepare for and attend meetings/ planning days/ training etc (e.g. read and consider Board papers)

Other relevant information

  • Training and ongoing professional development will be provided
  • The office is based in Melbourne. People outside of Melbourne are encouraged to express interest, with the understanding that occasional travel to attend Board meetings/ planning days/ training may be required
  • Interviews will be conducted virtually or in person, depending on applicant and panel location/ availability
  • This is a volunteer (unpaid) position
  • All travel and accommodation expenses directly related to Board meeting attendance is covered by Animals Australia
