The AMWU is seeking to employ a full-time administrative support person/reception for our Newcastle Regional Office. The successful applicant will be an essential part of the Office team, working directly with the Organisers and Officials and therefore requiring a high degree of personal and professional skill, commitment and confidentiality.

The applicant will be required to do those duties which would be required in a single person office and will need to be comfortable working alone for periods of time. Ad hoc project work pertaining to membership will also be coordinated with our Granville Office Team Leader. The AMWU is an Equal Opportunity Employer. You must have previous experience and able to demonstrate a commitment to the principles of trade unionism and social justice, which underlies all other criteria.

The successful applicant will have the following skills and experience:

  • Commitment, initiative and skill in the provision of a strong ‘member focus’ in all areas;
  • Experience in working as part of a team, in both a supervised and unsupervised capacity;
  • Excellent written communication skills; able to draft correspondence - letters, memos, agendas, minutes etc.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills; able to deal with complex enquiries and issues presented by members, other unions, employers, etc and an ability to refer to others when appropriate.
  • Intermediate skills and initiative with office based computer systems, outlook, word, presentation packages such as desk top publishing, power point, simple newsletter layout, spreadsheet and data presentation etc. Keyboard proficiency and accuracy of 55wpm with 98% accuracy;
  • Excellent administration skills including filing, archiving, maintaining diaries, organising internal and external meetings, telephone conferences, booking travel, accommodation and itineraries including venues, agendas, documentation, audio-visual requirements, catering, transport and accommodation, originate correspondence;
  • A current drivers license

Preferred Criteria

  • Ability to work to deadlines and prioritise workflow with excellent time management;
  • Ability and willingness to work co operatively with a range of personnel and agencies both inside and outside of the union;
  • A sound knowledge of how to access community resources including transport networks, government agencies, non government agencies, personal support services;
  • A sound understanding of civics, including a basic understanding of the role of government, non government organisations and the court system;
  • Immediate start required
