Research Project Officer - Culturally Responsive Trauma-Informed Care - Alice Springs

AMSANT is the peak body for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services in the Northern Territory and advocates for equity in health, focusing on supporting the provision of high quality comprehensive primary health care services for Aboriginal communities.

Primary objective:

  • Feasibility study completion:
    • Evaluation of Culturally Responsive Trauma-Informed Care (CRTIC) training with a partner Aboriginal Health service (training completed in 2020), using appropriate and culturally safe participatory action research methodologies
    • Produce a report which outlines the feasibility study findings, targeted towards Aboriginal PHC services and health system decision-makers
    • Publication of supporting summary documentation of research results for staff and service users
  • Implementation of CRTIC in partner Aboriginal health organisation(s):
    • Using research findings, work collaboratively with Aboriginal health services to provide implementation support, including working with all levels of the organisation to improve systems and policies
    • Produce Continuous Quality Improvement -processes and outcome measures for Aboriginal organisations to embed CRTIC models into practice
  • Evidence building within AMSANT’s SEWB team:
    • Prepare grant and funding applications to allow for the continuation and increased uptake and expansion of CRTIC
    • Support AMSANT member services to design and deliver services in trauma integrated ways, and evaluate their relevance and efficacy
    • Contribute to the development of training curriculum and resources that focus on the impacts of trauma, and the practices which support healing and recovery for Aboriginal health organisations, their staff and clients


  • Research:
    • Coordinate and undertake research including designing the evaluation, conducting the fieldwork, data analysis, report writing and feedback to partner Aboriginal health services.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and procedures and principles, including research ethics, participatory action research standards and demonstrate good practice in relation to CRTIC principles.
    • Manage the preparation and formulation of publications, presentations and research reports arising from the research and support feedback to the involved health service.
    • Collaborate with the SEWB team on varied resources and submissions relevant to the CRTIC project
  • Project governance and coordination:
    • Coordinate and participate in the team, and project investigator, governance, and partner meetings; develop agendas and track action items.
    • Maintain reporting to funding bodies and Ethics committees as required
  • Stakeholder management:
    • Coordinate project in active partnership with participating Aboriginal health services, inclusive of their Aboriginal culture and language context, and organisational requirements
    • Coordinate communication between AMSANT and partner Aboriginal health services, and local and national partners.
    • Support key contacts (CRTIC Champions) within Aboriginal health services

Selection Criteria:


  • PhD or equivalent qualifications/work experience in primary health care, public health, social-emotional wellbeing or a related field.
  • Specific experience in community-based participatory research including leadership responsibility.
  • Experience coordinating complex projects with multiple project team members who come from a variety of professional backgrounds.
  • Experience working with academic investigators and researchers as well as members of community organizations.
  • Demonstrated research skills, in both qualitative and quantitative methods (design, implementation, and analysis).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently with limited supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and to address complex situations with creativity.
  • Ability to communicate well with people from diverse ethnic/racial, socioeconomic, and professional backgrounds.
  • Ability to review existing research literature, and resources to contribute to the development/improvement of evidence-based resources for CRTIC.


  • Two to three years’ work experience in the field of public health
  • Strong and well-developed understanding of complex trauma
  • Some experience or knowledge of trauma-informed care strategies to enhance health outcomes
  • Experience working within the Aboriginal Community Control health sector

Appointment Factors: (Appointment is subject to)

  • Willingness to undergo a Police Check
  • Ability to obtain a Working with Children’s Clearance
  • Current Driver’s Licence
