Since 1974, Althea Projects Inc. has been supporting and strengthening the capacity of vulnerable people within Townsville and the surrounding regions. Our main programs are Foster & Kinship, Wee Care Residential and Althea’s Community Hub, from which we deliver a range of services.

Morehead Meals is a multi-level social enterprise connecting our community through affordable, ethical, healthy and delicious pre-made fresh and frozen meals. Available for purchase to everyone in our community, money from each meal purchased is reinvested back into Morehead Meals to assist us to grow the enterprise. Morehead Meals is run from Althea’s Community Hub which is a day centre for those who are vulnerable, homeless or at risk of homelessness.

We are looking to appoint a Chef on a part-time permanent basis for 26 hours per week. This position is responsible for ensuring a high standard of meal preparation in accordance with legislation, producing quality pre-prepared meals, delivering on catering requests and preparing lunches for the Community Hub in accordance with Morehead Meals aims and objectives. The role includes ensuring the operational requirements of a commercial kitchen.

Reporting to the Centre Coordinator, the Morehead Meals Chef is responsible for:

  • Ensuring the values, aims and objectives of Morehead Meals are incorporated into daily work practices.
  • Planning weekly menus, transforming rescued ingredients into delicious Morehead Meals.
  • Ensuring daily lunches are prepared for the Community Hub.
  • Managing and ordering the weekly supplies to compliment donated items, managing food costs and budgeting and recommending measures to control costs.
  • Collecting donated products from across the Townsville area.
  • Maintaining timeliness in food preparation and presentation.
  • Ensuring all food and catering is prepared, cooked and served in accordance with legislation.
  • The food hygiene and safety of the kitchen.
  • Cleaning the kitchen area at the end of Hub’s daily lunch, maintaining the hygiene of the kitchen as per the safety standards.
  • Maintaining refrigerators (clean, stocked and leftovers utilised to avoid waste).
  • Ensuring all kitchen administration requirements are met. E.g. Temperature charts, product quality checks, cleaning schedules.
  • Working closely with the Centre Coordinator to facilitate the menu planning, storage and distribution of Morehead Meals.
  • Working cooperatively as a team member within the broader context of the Community Hub and Althea projects.
  • Actively contribute to maintaining a culture which values health, safety and wellbeing.

Selection Criteria:

  • Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery or similar with relevant practical experience as a minimum, as well as a Food Supervisor Certificate Qld (SITXFSA005 & SITXFSA006)
  • Demonstrated experience in a commercial kitchen environment producing large volumes of food.
  • Demonstrated strong emphasis on quality with the ability to deliver a wide range of menu options.
  • Ability to be creative with donated food items to be able to make lunch each day for the Community Hub customers.
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in food safety and food hygiene.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and a focus on high performance and personal achievement.
  • Ability to establish work priorities for the day and meet deadlines.
  • Cultural awareness and understanding of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures and the issues which impact upon them in society.
  • Current C Class Qld Drivers Licence
