The ALS

The Aboriginal Legal Service NSW/ACT Limited (ALS) is a public company limited by guarantee and registered charity. It is primarily funded by the Australian Government Attorney-General's department and managed by an Aboriginal Board and governed by the ALS Company. The Company consists of thirty Aboriginal people from NSW and ACT and Company members are elected for three-year terms and represent their community.

The ALS is one of the largest Aboriginal legal practices delivering legal services to Aboriginal people in Australia. With over 200 staff, we provide information and referral, legal advice and court representation in criminal law, family law and care and protection law to Aboriginal men, women and children in 24 offices across urban, regional and remote NSW and ACT.

The Role

This role is part-time, 2 to 3 days per week.

Field Officer/Support role for Cth Disability Royal Commission, support clients seeking legal advice in relation to a range of civil legal issues not directly connected with the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. The commission was established in April 2019.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (ASTSILS) in partnership with National Legal Aid are designing and delivering a national Legal Advisory Service (NLAS) to provide legal advice, information and assistance to members of the public wanting to engage with the Royal Commission. 

  • Primary responsibility is to provide high quality support services to clients, in accordance with ALS policies, procedures and guidelines. 
  • To liaise with Aboriginal communities to support clients
  • Successful candidate will also be required to attend to client enquiries and liaise with clients, their families and the community in relation to the Disability Royal Commission

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander, identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or is accepted as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in the community in which he/she works
  • Knowledge and understanding of the social, legal and justice issues including abuse and systemic racism faced by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people with disabilities 
  • Understanding of the histories, cultures, languages, traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, able to work effectively and respectfully with communities
  • Ability to coordinate, facilitate and implement community education forums.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills
  • Hold a valid NSW Drivers Licence, inclusive of Provisional
  • Previous experience working with people with disabilities is desirable
