The Role

The primary responsibility and role of the Client Service Officer, Front Up Program is to assist in the reduction of the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Territory coming into contact with the criminal justice system, as both victims and offenders, as well as their families.

Overall the Aboriginal Legal Service NSW/ACT ACT Canberra Office provides high quality legal support advice and representation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, primarily in criminal matters and assist them to resolve their legal problems. 

The Client Service Officer, Front Up Program will have the following emphasis:

  • Provision of support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have either outstanding warrant(s) or have breached bail or a community-based sentencing order to have their matter resolved, where possible, without any necessary period in custody;
  • Provision of culturally appropriate service delivery and engagement;
  • Engagement and provision of appropriate supports for clients and their families;
  • Delivery of case management services and associated record keeping; and
  • Development of clear referral and service pathways and collaborative approaches including those in community and in government.

The ALS is one of the largest Aboriginal legal practices delivering legal services to Aboriginal people in Australia. With over 200 staff, we provide information and referral, legal advice and court representation in criminal law, family law and care and protection law to Aboriginal men, women and children in 24 offices across urban, regional and remote NSW and ACT.

Selection Criteria

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of social justice issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT and surrounds and, sound judgement to solve problems in a culturally appropriate and sensitive environment.
  • Sound knowledge of support and referral services available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the ACT and surrounds.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience and knowledge and experience with working with vulnerable people such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
