The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation (ALNF) is a registered national charity dedicated to raising language, literacy and numeracy standards in Australia. ALNF raises funds to develop, implement and sustain six ground-breaking programs with tangible results, supporting and up-skilling thousands of adults and children across the nation.

ALNF has a strong history of working to support literacy in Australia’s First Languages and the Living First Languages Program is a key component of its work. The Program combines a range of place-based and digital activities designed to support community-driven and sustainable language and literacy teaching and learning in Australia’s First Languages (https://alnf.org/program/firstlanguages/). We are currently working with six communities, with an outlook to extend to more.

One component of the Program is a digital solution, the Living First Languages Platform. The Platform provides Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with the technology and the support to record, display and teach language and literacy in their own First Languages. ALNF received support through the Google Impact Challenge in 2017, and in 2019 the Platform was recognised with three international awards: at SXSW in Austin, Texas; MIT Solve in Boston; and the UN-based World Summit Awards in Vienna.

The First Languages Program Facilitator will engage with communities to implement the Living First Languages Program. In particular, they will work with community members to develop their skills in creating, managing and using their own digital resources on the Living First Languages Platform.

Key Accountabilities

• Work with ALNF colleagues to implement the Living First Languages Program across diverse communities;
• Work with communities (through Local Language Facilitators) to record and organise Language elements in the LFLP digital resource specific to their Language, in accordance with community goals;
• Train and mentor community members in strategies for collating and producing Language elements and in managing their Language’s digital resource. This includes involvement in the creation of training/workshop materials;
• Work with communities and education providers (such as local schools and language centres) to support the development of further teaching content in First Languages, drawn from material hosted on the digital resource;
• Coordinate with assigned sites to prepare trip action plans, travel schedules, and post trip reports;
• Contribute to the development of training and workshop materials, user guides, tools, and templates;

• Following on-the-job training, deliver nationally recognised Certificate courses as an accredited Trainer and Assessor in the context of the First Languages Program;
• Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of Program delivery against community, internal and funder objectives;
• Contribute to reports, articles and research on the Program.

This is a full-time position involving extensive travel to project sites throughout Australia. ALNF is based in Sydney and the preference is for Sydney based employment, however we can consider other home locations for the right candidate.

This role involves working with children and will require Working with Children and National Police Checks.
