Alamein Neighbourhood and Learning Centre (ANLC) is a neighbourhood house and Learn Local organisation located in Ashburton, opposite the Alamein train station, in the City of Boroondara.

We are seeking applications for an experienced treasurer to join our skills-based voluntary Committee of Management (CoM). You will be joining the CoM at an exciting time as we embark on Centre redevelopment and a new three -year strategy for the organisation.

We provide a range of quality, accessible and affordable adult learning, and community programs. Our programs support participants to build life skills and confidence to re-enter the workforce or undertake further study.

We offer:

  • English as Additional Language program and literacy training
  • Work-based skills training to prepare for entry or return to work
  • Computer literacy classes including MS Office, digital literacy classes including iPads
  • Lifestyle and wellbeing classes, including yoga, pilates, photography, cooking
  • Community engagement events including Harmony Day, Biggest Morning Tea and Adult Learners’ Week activities.

In addition, we operate a Men’s Shed, Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Community Garden. We also partner with organisations on specific projects, such as our Family Learning Partnership Project (ACFE funded), that build and support community wellbeing.

The Centre is operated by a welcoming, dedicated, professional team of staff and volunteers, led by our Executive Officer. ANLC receives funding from City of Boroondara, Department of Health and Human services, Department of Health and Department of Education with an annual turnover of approximately $450,000.

About the role

The volunteer Committee of Management (CoM) provides strategic direction, governance support and oversight to ANLC in meeting its strategic goals. It meets monthly up to eight times a year, plus AGM.

The role of Treasurer is to oversee financial accounts and budgets, systems and controls; liaise with responsible staff on related financial and bookkeeping matters; present financial reports for monthly Committee meetings; ensure the Centre is meeting its financial and legislative obligations; and provide direction on financial matters to support decision-making as required.

We are looking for a skilled, capable and committed person who is keen to join the Board of a community-based organisation. Your qualifications and experience in accounting, audit or finance will mean you can hit the ground running. Previous involvement with a community-based or not-for-profit organisation or committee would be helpful but is not essential.

We welcome members who will bring to our CoM diversity of age, cultural and linguistic background including Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander, religion, sexuality, ability and life experiences.

Specific experience in one or more of the following areas would be highly regarded:

  • Finance
  • Risk management
  • Audit
  • Accounting
