Primary Objective:

Under direction of the CEO, provide a first point of contact for engagement with the service.

Requests for Cultural Awareness and working with interpreter training as well as interpreting and translating for private and Government departments

The Booking Officer will ensure that each interpreting assignment is matched to the most appropriate interpreter and provides administrative support to ensure each assignment progresses in the most efficient and effective manner.

Context:

AIWA is a community based Aboriginal organisation committed to improving understanding between WA Aboriginal language speakers, service providers, government and others through the provision of interpreting, translating and other services. AIWA maintains a team of interpreters and translators, provides training and support to those entering the profession, advocates for the use of interpreters and participates in state and federal policy development.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Provide a first point of contact for bookings or requests for information about the service.
  2. Manage initial interpreting and translation requests and matching of appropriately qualified interpreters.
  3. Complete arrangements for Interpreters requiring travel to assignments, make the appropriate bookings and process the relevant forms and prepare for payments using our custom designed job management system at every point of the process.
  4. Ensure all claims for payment, including travel and accommodation and invoices for goods and services are accurately recorded.
  5. Data entry
  6. Support arrangements for Cultural Awareness and Interpreter training.

Selection criteria

Essential:

  1. Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including appropriate negotiation and consultation with Aboriginal Interpreters/people across Western Australia.
  2. Well developed social awareness including an understanding of the complexities of Aboriginal cultural, social and economic issues and how they may impact on the recruitment and management of interpreters.
  3. Sound computing and data entry skills. Capacity to prepare reports from job management system and format for printing/presentation.
  4. Demonstrate exceptional organisational skills including the ability to prioritise and complete administrative tasks to ensure the timely delivery of services.
  5. Well-developed verbal and written communication skills with the ability to deal effectively and confidently with a wide range of internal/external clients and suppliers.
  6. High degree of honesty/integrity and willingness to supply a national Police Clearance prior to commencement
  7. Capacity to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, loyalty to the team, while ensuring client focus and excellent service
  8. Proven ability to participate in a team environment.

Desirable

  1. Broad knowledge of names of Aboriginal languages and geographic locations of towns and communities within the Western Australia.
  2. Current WA Drivers’ License.

Salary package:

  • $63,291 per annum including
  • 4 weeks annual leave
  • 17.5% annual leave loading
  • 9.5% SGC superannuation

Additional:

  • Salary packaging available

Hours:

38 hours per week. Some on-call arrangements and occasional travel will be required. Please note: The organisation does not pay overtime but time in lieu is offered.
