Victorian Greens Senator-elect Lidia Thorpe is seeking an experienced senior adviser to join her team as Chief of Staff with an anticipated commencement date of early August (negotiable).

The Chief of Staff provides strategic, campaign and policy advice, coordinates priority campaigns, and manages an electorate office team working across Melbourne and Canberra offices.

The Chief of Staff frequently accompanies the Senator on parliamentary business, public engagements and community meetings, involving travel and irregular hours. Note however that the Chief of Staff will not necessarily need to accompany the Senator to Canberra for all parliamentary sitting weeks.

PAY AND CONDITIONS

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984, and employment conditions are outlined in the Members of Parliament (Staff) Enterprise Agreement 2016-2019. In addition to the salary, employer-sponsored superannuation of 15% is offered.

The position is offered at an Electorate Officer B classification with a salary of $77,926 (depending on prior experience) p.a. plus 15% superannuation. The role attracts an additional Electorate Staff Allowance in the range of $16,116 - $24,174 per annum, in recognition of reasonable additional hours of work and travel outside of business hours, for a total salary range of $94,042 to $102,100 per annum.

Occasional interstate travel required.

  1. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a close, teamwork environment
  2. Outstanding organisational and project management skills, including demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities, work to tight deadlines in a dynamic environment and budget management
  3. Demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances
  4. Demonstrated campaign skills including research, strategy development, tactical deployment, preparation of materials, media and social media and working effectively with stakeholders and the community
  5. Strong written communication skills
  6. Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a wide cross-section of individuals, stakeholders and organisations
  7. Excellent understanding of the Australian political context & sound political judgement
  8. Understanding of the context of Aboriginal rights and interests within Australian society and culture
  9. Good knowledge and understanding of Australian Greens policies and operations
  10. Experience in managing staff
  11. Experience working in a political, community or campaigning organisation
  12. A commitment to the Australian Greens’ Charter and principles
