We are seeking a Unrestricted Solicitor to work at our office in Miriwoong Gajirrabeng (Kununurra), the position is to commence in January 2023. The successful applicant will work alongside the Principal Legal Officer to help shape the direction of the Aboriginal Family Legal Services in the Kimberly region and work with a degree of independence.

The Solicitor is responsible for the delivery of legal services, including Family Law, Protection and Care matters, Family Violence Restraining Orders, and Criminal Injuries Compensation. The successful applicant will provide legal advice, court representation and community legal education to Aboriginal people who have suffered, or are experiencing, family violence within their community.

To be considered for this position you need to meet the following criteria:

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Legal kills and Experience

  • Admitted or eligible for admittance to practice in the Supreme Court of Western Australia
  • Experience working within family law, child protection and legal aid
  • Unrestricted practitioners: Sufficient legal practice experience to work unsupervised on complex legal matters.
  • Forensic advocacy skills in the preparation of complex documents and in court/trial appearances and advocacy

Interpersonal Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills including oral and written
  • Positive attitude towards change and flexibility in meeting new and varied work demands.

Experience of working with Aboriginal communities

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with remote Aboriginal community issues
  • Commitment to the principles of Aboriginal self-determination and social justice
  • Demonstrated ability to travel to remote areas to deliver services to clients and the community
  • Post graduate education in Aboriginal Family Violence issues

ESSENTIAL

  • Minimum of 4 years’ post admission legal practice experience
  • Able to travel to remote areas to deliver services to clients and the community
  • Experience in family law, care and protection matters, criminal injuries compensation and family violence restraining orders
  • Advocacy Experience

ESSENTIAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Current ‘C’ Class WA Driver’s License
  • Current Police Clearance Certificate
  • Current Working with Children Check
  • Fully vaccinated against COVID 19 (including booster)
