Action for Dolphins

ABOUT US

Action for Dolphins (AFD) is a non-profit organisation that has been working to gain protection for, and prevent the suffering of, dolphins and other marine animals since 2012.

Our primary campaigns include removing lethal marine nets, bringing an end to dolphin hunting, and phasing out inhumane dolphin captivity.

We achieve our goals by bringing strategic legal actions and powerful advocacy and lobbying campaigns.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Since 2018 AFD has been working to remove lethal shark nets in Queensland. These nets have caught and killed thousands of animals including dolphins, whales, dugongs, turtles, and many harmless sharks. Science has shown these nets cannot guarantee swimmer safety in the water.

AFD is working on an exciting new project to do with the harmful Shark Control Program and environmental laws in Australia. We are working towards a review of the program under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, looking specifically at the detrimental impact of the program on threatened species.

Our team has been researching relevant legislation, meeting with legal advisors, contacting government bodies and submitting Right to Information requests, and we are now looking for an intern to help with this massive body of research and contribute to the case.

This internship is a unique opportunity to join a small and dynamic team making big progress for marine life. You will be required to attend our office in the CBD for one day per week (working from home occasionally will also be an option) and will work closely with our Campaigns Officer and CEO.

This is an opportunity to learn how a not-for profit is run, learning about other sectors in the organisation including community engagement, donor relations, and campaign strategy.

We want you to get the most out of this experience and offer mentoring and support each step of the way.

AS RESEARCH INTERN YOU WILL:

  • Use existing source lists to collect information and data on the impact of shark nets on threatened species, including the loggerhead turtle, green turtle, scalloped hammerhead shark, and grey nurse shark
  • Put together a literature review of existing findings and identify any gaps in the data
  • Develop an understanding of the Environmental Biodiversity and Conservation Act
  • Help to identify connections between literature review findings and possible legal avenues
  • Learn about Key Threatening Processes under Australian environmental law
  • Conduct any other related or ad-hoc campaign research
  • Report to Campaigns Officer on a daily basis for support and mentoring

If you don't have direct experience doing similar work, please still apply as you will be working closely with our Campaigns Officer and can build these skills during the internship.
