ADEC is a not for profit organisation assisting people with a disability, their families and carers from diverse cultural backgrounds. Operating out of 3 locations across Melbourne, we currently have a vacancy for a part time Senior NDIS Appeals Officer to join our NDIS Support Unit. This position is based out of our Preston office however currently ADEC is working from home due to COVID-19.

Your new role

As the Senior NDIS Appeals Officer you will report to the NDIS Support Unit Coordinator and work one-to-one with our NDIS participants to assist them in navigating the process of appeal or review of NDIA decisions. The emphasis of this role is to support clients through the review and appeal process and to improve client’s self-advocacy capacity through education of rights. You will be interacting daily with the NDIS participants who wish to appeal NDIA decisions along with supporting the program of capacity-building and community based initiatives for people with disability, mental illness and carers, so they can develop their capabilities an actively participate in community life.

Other duties will include:

  • Providing secondary consultations to service providers who are seeking assistance in working with people from ethnic backgrounds
  • Participating in the delivery of ADEC information service through briefings and presentations
  • Working with community groups to offer education on rights in relation to NDIA reviews and the review and appeals process
  • Supervising Appeals Officers in the NDIS Appeals Team
  • Providing secondary consultations to service providers who are seeking assistance in working with people from ethnic backgrounds

What you’ll need to succeed

You are a passionate and dedicated individual who is looking to make a difference in the community with a demonstrated commitment to disability human rights and social justice.

Essential

  • Previous social justice experience and passion for human rights
  • Previous experience navigating reviews and appeals of NDIA decisions
  • Previous NDIS appeals, advocacy or social work experience
  • Previous experience creating and maintaining client relationships
  • Ability to adhere to procedural deadlines and to manage conflicting priorities
  • Ability to plan a program of support with participants and to deliver it successfully
  • Ability to accurately collect statistics, record data, and maintain records
  • Current driver's licence (essential)
  • Current Police and Working with Children Checks (essential)

Desirable

  • Social Work qualifications or equivalent
  • Experience working with people with disability and carers, from ethnic communities
  • Experience working with NDIS participants
