ADEC is a not for profit organisation assisting people with a disability, their families and carers from diverse cultural backgrounds by empowering them to fully participate as members of the community. Operating out of 3 locations across Melbourne, we currently have a vacancy for a full time Capacity Building Officer to join our Projects department based out of our Dandenong office.

Your new role

As the Capacity Building Officer your goal is to build the capacity of ethnic communities. The foundation for this work will be strong networking skills to build relationships with ethnic leaders and ethno-specific organisations through which to develop understandings of communities’ needs. This position also has an important role to play with ADEC’s capacity building program to assist connections between ethnic communities and relevant services.

Other responsibilities and duties will include:

  • Providing information to assist people from ethnic communities to make informed choices about service options
  • Contributing to funding submissions
  • Organising regular education, information and well-being activities
  • Delivering community based projects
  • Supporting participants accessing or transitioning to the NDIS
  • Planning the annual program of capacity building education and information activities
  • Regular review of programs and activities to ensure they meet the needs of participants

What you’ll need to succeed

You are a passionate and dedicated individual who is looking to make a difference in the community with a demonstrated commitment to disability human rights and social justice. Your cultural ties with a non-English speaking ethnic community and high level of networking and relationship building skills will be crucial in this role. You have proven experience in not only planning a program of activities but successfully delivering on it.

You will also be able to clearly articulate and demonstrate:

  • Ability to work in a team & individually
  • Ability to build rapport with a diverse range of clients
  • Experience working with clients with complex support needs
  • Driven, energetic & committed
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • Qualification in community services, community development or public health
  • Experience in the community or disability sector
  • Current driver's licence (essential)
  • Current Police and Working with Children Checks (essential)

Desirable

  • Experience supporting people living with mental illness.
  • Experience working within the mental health sector
  • A second language
