ADEC is a not for profit organisation assisting people with a disability, their families and carers from diverse cultural backgrounds by empowering them to fully participate as members of the community. Operating out of 3 locations across Melbourne, we currently have a vacancy for a full time Advocacy Supervisor to join our Programs department based out of our Preston office.

Your new role

As the Advocacy Supervisor you will coordinate the daily activities and casework of the Advocacy unit to ensure that clients’ needs are met. You will work one-to-one with people from ethnic backgrounds with a disability and/or their carers to ensure and facilitate access to services, and equitable treatment within services. The foundation for this work is to work in partnership with people to enable them to improve their ability to access and participate in community life, and achieve their goals.

Other responsibilities and duties will include:

  • Ensure that all Advocates maintain an appropriate caseload, accurate work files and case notes
  • Manage client intake and allocation of new clients to Advocates
  • Support a program of self-advocacy training to enable clients to represent themselves, including engagement with other service providers to organise self-advocacy sessions
  • Provide secondary consultations to service providers who are seeking assistance in working with people from ethnic backgrounds
  • Participate in relevant service networks to promote ADEC and the Advocacy program
  • Conduct regular Advocacy unit meetings and keep appropriate records
  • Support students undergoing work placements within the Advocacy team
  • Support volunteers assisting within the Advocacy team

What you’ll need to succeed

You are a passionate and dedicated individual who is looking to make a difference in the community with a demonstrated commitment to bridge building, inclusion, empowerment, and philosophy and how this is translated to supporting people with disability making their own decisions. You will have the capacity to work with a diverse range of people, including people with disability, ethnic communities, service providers and funding bodies.

Essential

  • Appropriate qualification and/or experience in a comparable position
  • Previous experience in a supervisory or management position
  • Ability to plan a program of support with participants and to deliver it successfully
  • Accurate data collection and maintenance of records
  • Ability to build rapport with a diverse range of clients
  • Driven, energetic & committed
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience in the community or disability sector
  • Current driver's licence (essential)
  • Current Police and Working with Children Checks (essential)

Desirable

  • Formal qualifications or experience in law or legal affairs
  • Experience of working with people with disability and carers, from ethnic communities
  • A second language
