The ACTU is launching the Australian Trade Union Institute (ATUI), its education and training arm focussed on growth.

The ACTU seeks to ensure that its education and training work is focused on growth. As an educator in our team you will have a key role to play in this work with a particular focus on WHS education and training. The WHS Educator will be integrated into and work closely with the broader WHS team and numerous workgroups across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with unions to strengthen internal capacities and build programs that develop HSRs delegates and union staff.
  • Assist unions and TLCs develop strategic plans for organising workers around WHS issues.
  • Assist unions in developing organising staff by developing and delivering tailored education programs for unions in relation to workplace safety
  • Contribute to the development and sharing of cutting-edge WHS resources within the movement
  • Work with individual unions on campaigns & change
  • Plan, prepare and deliver high quality and well attended education programs that clearly contribute to the organisation’s growth agenda
  • Help build a team of expert WHS practitioners to share best practice and teaching from leading experts within the movement.
  • Support program participants in a variety of settings and through the active development of supportive learning environments
  • Establish and maintain appropriate interpersonal relationships between the ACTU and its affiliates.
  • Provide appropriate variety and flexibility in educational practice
  • Undertake assessment and evaluation of learning outcomes
  • Maintain and develop high professional standards and up-to-date expertise

Mandatory skills and qualifications

  • Demonstrated high-level WHS organising capacity and experiences within the trade union movement
  • Experience in developing and implementing operational WHS campaign and/or organising plans
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Australian trade union movement, its values, policies, programs and organisational structures.
  • High-level interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to be proactive and show initiative and good organisational skills.
  • Commitment and ability to provide feedback in an adult learning environment and a demonstrated ability to motivate others.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with people from a diverse range of backgrounds
  • Skills in the use of relevant information and communication technologies

Desired skills and qualifications

  • Relevant and suitable qualifications to deliver training on workplace health and safety to Health & Safety Representatives.
  • Certificate IV in Training & Assessment & equivalent
  • Experience as a union educator including both the delivery of courses, and curriculum development using active learning techniques.

Regular Interstate travel is a requirement of the position.
