Full time Contract role (18 months) working with the peak body for the Australian union movement, advancing workers’ rights focused on Software Development, based in Melbourne.

Our Organisation

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is the peak union body representing over 1.5 million workers and their families.

Since its creation in 1927, the ACTU has spearheaded some of the most fundamental workplace struggles in Australia’s history.

The ACTU’s role as a peak body is to be a national voice for our movement and defending and advancing workers’ rights by co-ordinating union campaigns, representing workers at a range of government and non-government forums and to provide industrial, policy and other support to our affiliates.

The role

We are looking for a full-time Software Developer (18-month contract) with the skills and experience of delivering code into production. This role is a great opportunity to use your technical skills for the benefit of Australian workers and their unions.

The role is in the ACTU’s Technology Team, based in our Melbourne office. With a key focus on integrating campaigning systems and databases, you will work with a mix of passionate and highly skilled colleagues to have a big impact on the growth and campaigns work of the ACTU and the whole Australian union movement.

Depending on your skills and experience, we will offer the successful candidate a level 5 salary plus 15% superannuation and generous leave arrangements, with opportunities for further development and training.

You will work alongside other Developers, Campaigners, Data & Digital Specialists to:

  • Design, build and maintain APIs and web applications that support the campaigning and growth work of the ACTU and the broader union movement.
  • Assist with integration of systems across the union movement.
  • Work with key stakeholders to build the right tools, that suit the needs of the movement.
  • Maintain a transparent, open, and communicative development style.

You will bring:

  • Experience in building and delivering software to production with a variety of languages and platforms.
  • Desire and ability to learn new skills and technology.
  • Passion for software engineering and writing quality code (experience with Agile practices, continuous delivery, and TDD).
  • Commitment to the values of the union movement.
  • A passion for open source and finding the best tools for the job.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, as well as manage your work and technical direction.
  • Ideally, experience with Python, PostgreSQL, Django, React, and/or other web technologies.
