The ACTU seeks to appoint a Political Director, to contribute to the growing and strengthening movement of working people and ensuring their voice is heard in political dialogue.

Our Organisation

The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) is the peak union body representing over 1.5 million workers and their families.

Since its creation in 1927, the ACTU has spearheaded some of the most fundamental workplace struggles in Australia’s history.

The ACTU’s role as a peak body is to be a national voice for our movement and defending and advancing workers’ rights by co-ordinating union campaigns, representing workers at a range of government and non-government forums and to provide industrial, policy and other support to our affiliates.

The role

The ACTU is looking to appoint a person to the position of Political Director. The successful applicant with have a range of experiences in working in high level political engagement. The Political Director provides advice to the Secretary on a variety of matters related to the ACTU and its affiliates engagements in the political sphere. Ideally you would be based in Melbourne however flexible work arrangements are available.

As political director you will work with the ACTU leadership to devise and drive the political relations strategy of the ACTU and facilitate a strong network amongst unions.

On a day-to-day basis you will monitor and manage political opportunities or risks and make recommendations as appropriate. You will have a well-developed understanding of political opportunities, parties, and institutions across the political spectrum.

Building and maintaining strong relationship will be fundamental to your work and your success. Teamwork and the ability to collaborate will be essential.

You will be passionate about contributing to growing and strengthening a movement of working people and ensuring their voice is heard in political dialogue.

You will have strong political analysis skills, good judgement, and can point to a range of outcomes delivered through effective political engagement; You will have a detailed understanding of the Australian political landscape, and legislative and parliamentary processes.

Being able to work under pressure will be fundamental to your work. And you will be able to develop and implement strategy collaboratively.
