ACT Attorney-General, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction and Minister for Gaming is seeking applicants for a Legal Advisor to provide policy and political advice.

The Legal Advisor will provide high level policy, analytical and strategic political advice on legislation and legal reform, provide briefings, speeches, correspondence and other outputs; research; liaise with a range of internal and external stakeholders; and work closely with other staff to deliver policy advice.

The successful candidate will have strong research and analytical skills and be a good communicator. An understanding of parliamentary processes and the ACT political system would be an advantage. Your ability to manage relationships with a range of stakeholders and work with limited supervision in a dynamic environment will be critical to your success in this role.

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment, or willingness, to implement ACT Greens principles and policies.

Key duties

  • Analyse and review complex legal and policy issues, undertake research and assist the Minister with issues management as directed.
  • Provide advice, briefings, speeches and other outputs for the Minister as required.
  • Work closely with the team to support and provide input into longer term planning, strategy development, and policy review for the Minister.
  • Developing and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships relevant to the portfolio across the legal sector, justice system and community sector in the ACT.
  • Liaise with Directorate staff on portfolio issues including briefings, legislation, speeches and events
  • Provide high level administrative support, including: Assembly sitting, legislative development and budget preparation processes; support Office Manager as required
  • Provide timely input into planned and reactive media and communications activities
  • Apply a demonstrated commitment, or willingness, to implement ACT Greens principles and policies around ecological sustainability, social justice, peace and non-violence and grassroots participatory democracy are being implemented appropriately.
  • Other duties as directed

Selection criteria

  1. Strong research, analytical and problem solving skills;
  2. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal and relationship management skills;
  3. Capacity to work independently, meet deadlines and work under pressure;
  4. Experience or understanding of community or campaigns sector;
  5. Legal qualifications are essential; and
  6. Experience or understanding of parliamentary systems, the ACT political and judicial systems, and the ACT legal community are highly desirable.

The position will be available from January 2021.

The role is for the term of the Government and is set at Adviser Level 2 at $100,038 - 105,345 depending on experience, plus superannuation and 9.5% loadings in lieu of overtime and Long Service Leave.

The successful candidate will be engaged under a Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff contract, and other terms and conditions of employment are governed by the ACT Legislative Assembly Members’ Staff Enterprise Agreement 2018 – 2021. It is not an ACT Public Service position.
