About us...

Act for Kids is a prominent provider of free prevention, professional therapy and support services for children who have suffered abuse and support for families at risk. With over 25 centres nationally, we have supported thousands of children and their families for more than 30 years. In 2019 - 2020 we provided services to 44,894 people, including over 29,000 children.

The SafeKIDS program is a residential service created in partnership with The Aboriginal Corporate of West Cape York Peninsula Traditional Land Owners (WCTO) to support the communities of Aurukun, Doomadgee, Pormpuraaw, Napranum and Kowanyama. The SafeKIDS program aims to keeps kids in community, by providing a safe and culturally appropriate home environment for children to remain connected to family, culture and country whilst their ongoing child protection intervention and placement needs are assessed.

Our Family Reunification House, located in Cairns, provides fully supported residential care for a large sibling group of children who are in the process of being reunified with their parents whilst giving additional support to the parents.

About the job...

We are seeking a committed and caring Team Leader to join our Family Reunification House based in Cairns. The role is full-time and fixed-term until 31 December 2023. Extension of employment contract beyond December 2023 is subject to the continued successful government funding of the program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide a warm, nurturing and culturally safe home environment for children and young people placed in the Family Reunification House.
  • Partner with the Program Coordinator and Operations Manager to ensure smooth day to day running of the Safe House including:
    • Work within an allocated budget for all household purchases and stock control.
    • Promote all Act for Kids policies and procedures and comply with best practice Workplace Health and Safety. This includes ensuring all household maintenance and tasks are completed to ensure ongoing safety.
    • Create an inclusive routine within the home environment for children to participate in.
    • Provide children access to school and learning activities, teaching children new skills through fun activities.
    • Developing team member rosters and timesheets to ensure ongoing care and support within the house.
  • Provide values based leadership and support to a dedicated team providing quality trauma informed care aligned to the Hope and Healing Framework to children placed with the service
  • Participate in a positive manner in any internal and external case conferences, Department of Child Safety Youth and Women planning and review processes and other meetings as appropriate.
  • Lead the team to collaborate with organisations to support each child and young person’s placement plans, including community integration and eventual transition to family or alternative.
  • Participate in on-call roster and be available for weekends, evening and sleep overs when required.

About you...

  • Hold or in the process of completing a minimum Certificate IV in Child Youth & Family Intervention or other relevant qualification in Community Services, or as outlined in the Strengthening the Queensland Residential Care Workforce – Minimum Qualification Standards Information Sheet.
  • Hope and Healing Foundations Framework Certificate.
  • Willingness to undergo and pass a Suitability Check before engagement in the provision of care services by licensed out-of-home care service providers under the Child Protection Act 1999 and Child Protection Regulation2011.
  • Demonstrated skills and experience working within a trauma informed framework.
  • Experience in managing disruptive behaviours and mentoring of employees through challenging situations to ensure children in the house are given the best level of
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality about our work with children and families.
  • An ability to effectively problem solve and manage contingencies under pressure;
  • Cultural awareness and an understanding of how to communicate and work effectively with families from different socio-economic and cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

About the pay...

  • Position is classified Level 5.1 – 5.3 under the SCHCADS award;
  • Salary range is $82,781 - $86,530 plus 9.5% superannuation (pro-rata for part-time).
