Act for Kids is a prominent provider of free prevention, professional therapy and support services for children who have suffered abuse and support for families at risk. With over 25 centres nationally, we have supported thousands of children and their families for more than 30 years. In 2019 - 2020 we provided services to 44,894 people, including over 29,000 children.

Our unique multidisciplinary teams provide integrated therapy, sexual abuse counselling, safe houses in remote Indigenous communities, information, advice and referral services, intensive family support and preschools designed for children with additional development needs to ensure we set them up for success at school.

About the job...

We are looking for a Specialist Domestic & Family Violence Practitioner to provide specialist advice and assistance to our Intensive Family Support (IFS) Service and Family and Child Connect (FaCC) Service’s based in Cairns. This position is full-time, fixed term until 31 March 2024. Extension of employment contract beyond December 2021 is subject to the continued successful government funding of the program.

Key responsibilities:

  • Maximise the domestic and family violence capability of the FaCC, IFS and Local Level Alliance in partnership with local domestic and family violence services.
  • Assess referrals into the IFS to screen for domestic and family violence.
  • Undertake risk assessments where domestic and family violence is identified.
  • Provide colleagues and enquirers with advice on safe engagement strategies for families affected by domestic and family violence.
  • Participate in home visits where appropriate.
  • Assist with the assessment of client needs and decisions regarding intensive support, case management and referral pathways.

About you...

  • A tertiary degree in a relevant discipline (allied health, social work, human services) and Professional registration (if required).
  • At least 5 years working in a domestic and family violence capacity either with male perpetrators or in a generalist capacity.
  • An understanding of contemporary issues and challenges in the field of child protection and approaches to enhancing child safety and wellbeing.
  • Experience and knowledge of domestic and family violence issues including theory, dynamics and the impact on individuals, families and communities.
  • Ability to engage, empower and build strong working relationships with a diverse range of clients stakeholders, partners and colleagues.

About the pay...

  • Position is classified Level 5.1 – 5.3 under the SCHCADS award;
  • Salary range is $80,305 - $83,941 plus 9.5% superannuation (pro-rata for part-time);
