What is the ACF?

When it comes to our environment, the Australian Conservation Foundation has been leading the way in protecting our living world for over half a century.

We are the national environment organisation committed to caring for Australia’s beautiful wildlife and natural world. We’re inclusive, evidence-based and non-partisan. And we are funded entirely by the Australian community.

Whether it’s advocating for the Great Barrier Reef, Tasmania’s forests or koalas snoozing in big old trees, our dedicated community of over 700,000 supporters is constantly working to create a world where forests, rivers, people and wildlife thrive.

We also campaign to solve the climate crisis. After a difficult 2020, we believe now is the right time for our government to invest in the right projects to help rebuild our economy and to end the climate crisis. It might not seem like it now, but we are entering one of the most important decades in human history. This will be the most creative, transformative decade humanity has ever seen.

What’s the gig?

The Story Strategy Lead shapes ACF’s “change the story” priority work. They research and analyse ACF’s target audiences, develop messaging guides and advise ACF staff on messaging, message framing and story structures.

They also co-ordinate the development of story (or narrative) strategies that support and drive campaign, mobilisation and fundraising objectives.

The Story Strategy Lead is also responsible for developing longer term strategies, in consultation with the Engagement Director, that seek to change public discourse from narratives that assume achieving a healthy natural environment and peoples’ well-being and are in conflict, to narratives that enable people – including key decision-makers – to value nature and to act to create a world where it thrives.

About you!

You will be at a point in your career where you are confident that the skills you have honed as a media, public relations or marketing communications professional are most effectively applied to influencing others and communicating compelling, action-worthy stories.

You’re also street smart. You understand that not all people think alike and can turn audience research to relatable messages and stories. It’s a special skill, you know how to meet audiences of people where they are and take them on a journey to further engagement and action.

Words matter, so of course you are creative, innovative, and a critical thinker, but also - importantly – you seek to create authentic, believable and also emotional stories that trigger shared values and help win campaigns. You are happy to work autonomously, and can motivate yourself, but can adapt to working in a collaborative team environment just as easily.

You should be able to think quickly on your feet and respond effectively and with poise when the situation calls for it. Above all, you’ll need to show initiative, and originality, as well as demonstrating experience in leading communications strategies to reach and engage people.
