Homelessness Local Engagement Officer - Flexible location

  • Temporary (casual) positions with variable working hours, including days, evenings and weekends.
  • $36.90 per hour (inclusive of 25% loading), plus superannuation.
  • Contract dates between 14 April 2021 and 20 September 2021. Contract dates and lengths may vary.

About the roles

The Homelessness Local Engagement Officer (LEO) role is critical in facilitating people experiencing homelessness to have a voice. LEOs will help find ways to best support people to overcome barriers to participating in the Census. 

LEOs will likely engage with local stakeholders within the community, and this will include managing a Homelessness workload and recruiting staff to help complete the count.

Key responsibilities for the Homelessness Local Engagement Officer include:

  • Undertake training and receive and distribute field materials relevant to your role.
  • Connect with diverse population groups and communities who may be experiencing Homelessness.
  • Seek information on local homelessness populations and services through engagement with the homelessness sector.
  • Recruit, train and manage individuals to enumerate people sleeping rough and dwellings occupied by people experiencing homelessness.
  • Work independently and travel to various work areas across your area of responsibility.
  • Work both from home and in the field, using your own vehicle to move around the work area. 
  • Follow-up when Census forms are not returned.
  • Complete administration forms, including effort recording and report issues in line with reporting arrangements.
  • Taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and taking reasonable care that your actions or omissions do not impact the health and safety of other people, including other Census field workers.
  • Other duties as directed.

Your qualities, experience and skills

The successful candidate will exhibit most of the below qualities, experience and skills: 

  • Working with and supporting people experiencing homelessness or undertaking similar work in the Community sector.
  • Experience in community engagement and developing relationships at a local level.
  • Self-motivated, able to work and make decisions independently.
  • Established good quality communication skills.
  • Good attention to detail and a keen eye for accuracy.
  • Skills in administration and implementing processes according to prescribed procedures.
  • Local area knowledge and an ability to read and navigate maps.
  • Ability to work in a busy, high volume environment operating with tight deadlines and working additional hours (if required).
