An exciting opportunity has become available to work for Barnardos, one of Australia’s leading children’s charities. Barnardos Australia builds relationships between children, young people, their families and the community. They advocate for children and young people and contribute to community knowledge about their issue.

The Role

As a result of Executive Level restructure, Barnardos is looking for a permanent part-time (3-4 days / approx 56 hours per fortnight) Company Secretary based at Barnardos Head Office in Ultimo, Sydney.

Reporting to the Chair and CEO, the Company Secretary supports the Board in its activities, assists in the establishment of a healthy governance culture, and is responsible for ensuring smooth organisation of Board processes. The role provides advice to the Board on good practice in corporate governance, and on standards of ethical behaviour.

The role ensures that the Company meets its statutory, regulatory and legal obligations under the relevant legislation with special reference to its corporate activities.

The Candidate

The successful Company Secretary will ideally have:

  • Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD), or other equivalent Company Secretarial qualification, such as that acquired through the Governance Institute of Australia
  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant Bachelor Degree
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a Company Secretary role to Boards, and demonstrated experience in professional engagement with high level stakeholders, including organisational governance and government
  • Demonstrated high attention to detail and experience in providing a broad range of support to Board and Management including scheduling meetings, preparing agendas, minutes and board papers
  • Proven experience in managing sensitive information and ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality in all matters
  • Experience and understanding of operational requirements within a complex organisation
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislative and regulatory environment for Boards, preferably within the not for profit sector
  • Strong influencing, negotiation, and written and verbal communication skills

Additional info

To be considered for roles with Barnardos you will need to have (or be willing to have conducted) a National Police Clearance and current Working with Children check Clearance (or APP number).

You will be required to be flexible with your working hours, given Chair and CEO requirements, evening board and committee meetings, and periods of intense work versus less intensity.
