Located in Tamworth, NSW the Dementia Counsellor is responsible for providing support for people living with dementia, their families and carers to enhance their quality of life through the provision of individual, group or family counselling. Providing services with an empowerment and well-being approach and focussing on the needs of the person living with dementia and their families and carers, this role will also provide a range of education, services information and resources regarding dementia.

Reporting directly to the Team Leader, Client Services you will also be responsible for:

  • Delivering a range of psycho-educational and psycho-social group programs to people living with dementia and their families and carers
  • Identifying alternative services and supports needed by clients and making appropriate internal and external referrals as required
  • Establishing links, collaborating with and developing close working relationships with other Dementia Australia staff and a range of external stakeholders

To be successful in this role you will be a team player, show an absolute commitment to the delivery of high quality dementia services and support and meet the key selection criteria outlined below.

Key Selection Criteria:

  1. Registration with, or eligibility for membership of, a relevant professional body or association (e.g. Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, Australian Counselling Association, Australian Association of Social Workers or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia)
  2. Extensive counselling experience
  3. Knowledge and understanding of the impact of the diagnosis and progression of dementia on the person and their family.
  4. Experience in the delivery of educational information and group programs
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, presentation skills etc.)
  6. Well-developed case note, record keeping and report writing skills
  7. Demonstrated capacity to deliver high quality presentations across a diverse community

Qualifications:

  • Tertiary qualification in a related field of either Psychology, Social work or Counselling
