Rural workforce Agency are partnering with Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (SHSAC) to find a Maternal Early Childhood Sustained Home - Visiting Program Nurse (MECSH), to join their passionate team. SHSAC a community controlled health organisation providing comprehensive primary health care services through nine remote health centres in the Katherine East region.

The SHSAC approach involves community people owning and controlling their health services, with the aim of providing comprehensive primary health care programs that are holistic and culturally safe through traditional knowledge with Western evidence-based practice.

Being the successful MECSH Program Nurse, you will reside in Barunga and travel to Manyallaluk (Eva Valley) and Bulman to deliver the MECSH structured program of sustained nurse home visiting for families at risk of poorer maternal and child health and development outcomes. Your role is to provide Primary Health Care to families and identify problems early in the child's development and offer advice and pursue opportunities for health promotion and prevention.

The Location:

Barunga is a small Aboriginal community located approximately 80 kilometres southeast of Katherine NT and the home of the traditional owners the Jawoyn people. Having a population of around 400, Barunga has a health clinic, camping grounds, sports oval, basketball courts, softball pitch, school, council office and a community store. Each year the community holds the Barunga Festival with cultural celebrations, workshops, dancing ceremonies, traditional bush tucker gathering, didgeridoo making, basket weaving, musical performances and sport.

Manyallaluk (Eva Valley) is 3hrs away from Barunga and has a small population that is serviced by SHSAC. Manyallaluk was called Eva Valley Cattle Station until the 1970's when handed back to traditional owners, and now offers opportunity to have a tour with a local guide and learn cultural history and see amazing local art.

SHSAC also provides health services to Bulman, being 3hrs from Barunga, a well know cattle station with the Weemol Outstation 5km away making a total population of around 300 people. The Walamun Cultural Festival is run by community members and gives opportunity to share in their arts, crafts, talents and culture and is usually run in July each year.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support mother's and family's psychological and environment issues
  • Enable and support the mother and family to enhance coping and problem solving skills
  • Promote and support a positive parent-infant interaction
  • Foster positive parenting skills, and mentor maternal and infant bonding
  • Support parents to look towards the future for themselves and their children 

Essential Selection Criteria:

  • Evidence of full working rights within Australia
  • Registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse
  • Demonstrated 5yrs remote child health experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues pertaining to Aboriginal primary health care
  • Experienced working with vulnerable families
  • Knowledge of social determinants of Aboriginal health
  • Willingness to take cultural advice from community members, Aboriginal Health Practitioners and community outreach teams
  • Ability to work autonomously with excellent time management skills
  • Advanced written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrated experience working with children and families
  • Understanding of legislation governing work practice in the NT desirable
  • Knowledge of child development an advantage
  • Post Graduate qualification and experience in Midwifery or Maternal, Child and Family Health Nursing or Public Health highly regarded
  • Willingness to undertake extensive travel to Manyallaluk (Eva Valley) and Bulman
  • Willingness to travel in light aircraft or 4WD with overnight stays in SHSAC remote communities
