ALRM conducts community-based legal service and other law related programs including providing legal representation and advice to the Aboriginal people of South Australia, from offices in Adelaide and Regional Offices in Ceduna, Port Augusta and Port Lincoln.

About the Role:

The position is located at ALRM Adelaide Office. The Lawyer is responsible to the Criminal Practice Director. 

The role is to conduct all Legal work in the Magistrates Court including Bail Applications, negotiating Client matters, Pre Trial Conferences, guilty pleas and trials depending on level of experience. 

Travelling to country locations for the purpose of conducting Court matters is a requirement of this role.

Candidate Requirements / Selection Criteria:

  • Admitted or eligible for admission as a Solicitor or Barrister of the Supreme Court of South Australia.
  • 2 years minimum experience in criminal law.
  • Must have unrestricted Practicing Certificate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the criminal legal system, its requirements for effective client representation and its impact upon Aboriginal people.
  • Demonstrated experience as Solicitor and counsel in Magistrates Courts in criminal matters.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the issues confronting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in relation to the delivery of legal services and in the wider community.
  • Capacity to work effectively in an Aboriginal organisation. 
  • Commitment to delivering culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients.                                    
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-level organisational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to efficient and effective service delivery and a commitment to a client-centred focus.
  • Ability to manage and balance priorities in an environment of high workloads and varied casework.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office packages, office equipment and office systems.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and share decision making.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect, approachability and mediation, consistency and model exemplary leadership qualities and behaviours.
  • Must have a current South Australian driving license.
