Animal Shelter Manager - Blue Mountains

The Shelter Manager role has been established to provide customer service and people management expertise for the RSPCA NSW’s shelter in the Blue Mountains Region, while ensuring that standards of animal care and wellbeing are continuously improved.

The role is responsible for ensuring that staff are trained, supported, coached and managed, as well as resolving customer and other service issues and/or complaints.

Additionally, the Shelter Manager must manage budgets and expenses, rosters and other people related matters in accordance with both RSPCA policy and legislation. Another function of this role is managing the Council Impound Contract as well as Council relationships that RSPCA NSW have within the Hunter Region.

Other responsibilities include the effective running and operation of the shelter, including making difficult decisions relating to animal wellbeing, developing / implementing new initiatives to contribute to an increase in re-homing rates, rehabilitation and partnering with internal and external clients to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.

About the Role:

You will have the confidence to interact with both individuals and groups and will possess strong time management and organisational skills. In addition, you will also possess the following:

  • Previous experience in people management and leadership e.g. Proven ability to develop and coach others, performance management, recruitment
  • Experience in animal handling and animal welfare
  • Demonstrated affinity with people and animals and a commitment to improving and promoting animal welfare
  • Ability to work autonomously, problem solve and use initiative
  • Demonstrated experience in managing budgets
  • High level of integrity with a strong work ethic
  • Unrestricted NSW driver's licence
  • Physically fit and able to lift 20kg

About You:

It goes without saying that everyone working with RSPCA NSW loves animals, but those handling our nearest and dearest on a daily basis go that extra mile to ensure our animals receive all the love and care they deserve.

  • Certificate II in Animal Handling or Animal Care (essential)
  • Unrestricted NSW driver's licence (essential)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in animal handling (essential)
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a management or leadership role
  • Tertiary qualifications in management or administration
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Certified euthanasia technician
  • Certified microchip implanter
  • Be physically fit and able to lift 20kgs
  • Demonstrated experience managing databases and administrative systems
  • Previous proven customer service or retail experience
  • Previous experience with staff performance reviews and management (advantageous)
  • Previous experience in staff selection, recruitment and training (advantageous)
  • Ability to lead and coach a team
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Critical thinking and problem solving
