Shareholder Action Campaigner

Market Forces

  • Salary: $90,000 p.a. pro-rata + super ($72,000 p.a. at 0.8FTE)
  • Term: 4 days per week (0.8FTE) for 12 months with a view to renewal dependent on performance and funding availability. We will consider candidates wishing to work full time. Flexibility in working hours will be required at times.

Since 2013, Market Forces has been working to redirect finance away from activities that harm the environment and into those that protect and enhance it. We focus on the role that banks, superannuation funds and other investors, insurance companies and governments play in financing environmentally risky and damaging activities. We strongly focus on climate change and the essential energy revolution the world needs to undertake if we are to secure a stable long-term climate. Our team delivers and supports campaigns on the most egregious examples of fossil fuel polluters, extending that support to partners in Asia and beyond, wherever we can make the best interventions to shift finance away from dirty fossil fuels.

The Shareholder Action Campaigner role helps bring about accountability to companies around the world for the environmental impacts of their activities or investments. You will support thousands of people who own shares in companies to have their voices heard by company boards and management.

You will also work with key external stakeholders, often representative of communities affected by fossil fuel or other environmentally damaging projects, to elevate their profile and hold accountable decision-makers at major companies.

You’ll be working with regular “mum and dad” shareholders, larger investors, community stakeholders, our own volunteers, as well as people working for companies we need to urgently change if we’re to solve the climate crisis.

You are a focused, dedicated individual who wants nothing more than to deliver meaningful, lasting changes to benefit the environment. You are a great person to be around, whether it’s as a direct colleague, leader of a movement, or partner in a coalition. You’re able to balance a deep determination for getting results with a calmness resilient to rapidly changing circumstances, pressure and at times uncertainty.

  • High level of personal organisation.

  • Understanding issues relating to climate change, energy, and shareholder rights.
  • Experience working in a non-government or advocacy organisation.
  • Understanding the rights of shareholders and requirements of corporate governance.

  • Empower and coordinate stakeholders of financial institutions to support Market Forces’ objectives.
  • Design and organise public activities and events designed to bring people power to bear on financial institutions and companies as part of Market Forces campaigns.
  • Engage and support the supporter base of Market Forces to maximise the number of people taking action as part of our campaigns.
  • Liaise with other organisations working on corporate governance, environmental protection, human rights and other significant issues in order to coordinate efforts to hold companies accountable for their impacts on people and the environment.

Our main office is in Melbourne, where we can provide office space for the successful candidate, but the potential for this role to be conducted remotely means we invite applicants from around Australia.

For candidates outside of Melbourne, provision of office space and equipment would need to be negotiated between the employee and management of Market Forces.

Market Forces will cover costs incurred as a result of campaign work (e.g. travel, accommodation) but these are always to be agreed beforehand with the employee’s direct report.
