ABOUT MARKET FORCES

Since 2013, Market Forces has been working to redirect finance away from activities that harm the environment and into those that protect and enhance it. We focus on the role that banks, superannuation funds and other investors, insurance companies and governments play in financing environmentally risky and damaging activities. We strongly focus on climate change and the essential energy revolution the world needs to undertake if we are to secure a stable long-term climate. Our team delivers and supports campaigns on the most egregious examples of fossil fuel polluters, extending that support to partners in Asia and beyond, wherever we can make the best interventions to shift finance away from dirty fossil fuels.

SUMMARY OF KEY TASKS AND DUTIES:

  • Investigate companies and deliver analysis supporting the campaigns of Market Forces and our partners.
  • Develop, manage and maintain the databases and other source material that underpins Market Forces’ campaigns and those of our partner organisations.
  • Identify campaign opportunities evident from research work.
  • Handle external research requests received by partner organisations or like-minded groups.
  • Represent Market Forces in meetings with stakeholders, campaign targets and to public audiences directly and via media channels.

SELECTION CRITERIA (ESSENTIAL):

  • Highly analytical, curious, and meticulously detail-oriented.
  • Experience scrutinising others’ work with a view to ensuring the final product is of exceptionally high quality.
  • Skilled and comfortable with data management, and especially proficient in spreadsheet / database software.

SELECTION CRITERIA (DESIRABLE):

  • Experience using financial research platforms such as Refinitiv Eikon, Bloomberg Professional and/or IJGlobal.
  • A background in commerce, business, economics or finance.
  • Knowledge of climate change and energy issues and/or the workings of financial institutions.

LOGISTICS AND EXPENSES

Our main office is in Melbourne, where we can provide office space for the successful candidate, but the potential for this role to be conducted remotely means we invite applicants from around Australia.

For candidates outside of Melbourne, provision of office space and equipment would need to be negotiated between the employee and management of Market Forces.

Market Forces will cover costs incurred as a result of research or campaign work (e.g. travel, accommodation) but these are always to be agreed beforehand with the employee’s direct report.
