Animal Ethics Committee Member - Community Member (voluntary)

Deakin University is seeking new members to join their Animal Ethics Committee (AEC) with an initial term of office of two years.

The membership of the Committee is determined by government legislation and the Category D membership to be filled is described as a person not employed by or otherwise associated with the institution and who has never been involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond their undergraduate education. Category D members should be viewed by the wider community as bringing a completely independent view to the AEC.

Background: The primary responsibility of the AEC is to assess applications to use animals for scientific purposes and teaching in line with the requirements of the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes 2013 (the Code) and government legislation. 

Meetings: The Committee meets up to eight times a year at the Deakin University Burwood Campus.

Remuneration: This is a voluntary position, with an honorarium payment of $500

Essential Criteria:

  • Must not be employed or have any affiliation with Deakin University
  • Must have never involved in the use of animals in scientific or teaching activities, either in their employment or beyond under-graduate education
  • Should be viewed by the wider community as bringing a completely independent view to the AEC

Desirable:

  • Knowledge and willingness to learn government legislation and guidelines relating to animal research and ethics
  • Willingness to attend training courses
  • Demonstrated experience as a committee member dealing with complex issues
