THE ORGANISATION

Domestic Violence Crisis Service (DVCS) is a non-government, not-for-profit specialist domestic and family violence service that seeks to reduce violence and abuse in relationships. DVCS provides crisis and long-term support services to help break the domestic and family violence cycle. DVCS is here to support people, both during and after crisis situations as well as support programs for those who use violence, with the aim of bringing about change.

ROLE PURPOSE AND CONTEXT

Room4Change is a Men's Behaviour Change Program situated within DVCS.  Room4Change Practitioners work as part of a team to ensure that DVCS provides a high quality; best practice range of domestic violence crisis intervention services to the ACT community which is responsive, respectful, flexible and culturally appropriate. The Room4Change team support DVCS to maintain a positive public profile, work towards change in community attitudes to domestic violence issues, and promote and maintain cooperative and respectful relationships with other agencies.

In a co-operative team environment and in line with DVCS Vision and Objectives and in accordance with Policies and Procedures Room4Change Practitioners work with men who have used violence and/or other controlling behaviours to provide case management, outreach, advocacy and comprehensive management plans.

Room4Change Practitioners are supervised and supported on a day-to-day basis by the Room4Change Team Leader and Program Support Manager for all aspects of client service provision and are expected to engage in support/reflection, supervision, performance appraisal and debriefing processes as required.

Service Provision:

Room4Change Men’s Practitioners are primarily responsible for:

  • Working with men who have used violence and/or other controlling behaviours
  • Facilitating and observing group work
  • Providing case management to men with complex support needs including outreach and advocacy
  • Conducting comprehensive risk assessments and undertake safety planning as part of a comprehensive case management plan
  • Liaising and networking with relevant government and community agencies as required including Police, Legal Aid, Courts and accommodation providers
  • Recording relevant data during each shift
  • Working within a small team environment and be available to work outside of normal business 

selection criteria

The Room4Change Men’s Practitioner will require the following skills, experience and capabilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to liaise with a wide variety of people
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and use initiative
  • Able to prioritise competing tasks and ensure deadlines are met and expectations managed when issues arise
  • Strong knowledge of domestic and family violence, and its impacts across the community
  • Knowledge and understanding of domestic and family violence and the issues that face people who are affected including people with complex needs who require a range of system responses
  • Well-developed client centred responses for people who are experiencing or have experienced trauma
  • The ability to work in a diverse team of people across a range of programs with a focus on developing and maintaining a growth mindset regarding personal development and service provision
  • Ability to work flexibly to meet the needs of the business
  • A demonstrated commitment to the values of equity, inclusion and diversity
  • Current Working with Vulnerable People Card
  • Current driver’s licence

SALARY

Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the SCHCADS Award levels 5.1 to 6.3. Salary commensurate with qualifications, demonstrated skills and experience.
