We’re an independent, not-for-profit consumer organisation based in Melbourne. We offer a unique opportunity to apply your outstanding consumer and credit law, litigation and dispute resolution skills. As well as direct telephone based services, providing valuable advice to community workers and consumers, we maintain a high-impact strategic litigation practice. Our legal casework informs our policy and campaign priorities as we advocate for change.

You’ll join our team of 13 lawyers providing telephone advice to callers, undertaking strategic casework and litigation, identifying systemic issues and researching the law and reviewing legal documents. You’ll be working also with policy experts, seasoned campaigners, communications professionals, community engagement specialists and financial counsellors to shape better laws that impact all Australians.

About you

  • You hold, or are eligible to obtain, a current unrestricted practising certificate in the State of Victoria and have a minimum of 5 years post admission experience;
  • You have experience in commercial litigation and dispute resolution and have conducted matters in both courts and tribunals;
  • Your commitment to advancing the public interest and social justice can be seen from your work experience to date;
  • You enjoy applying your outstanding legal research and technical legal analysis skills;
  • You're interested in identifying systemic issues and keen to hone your ability to identify policy and advocacy opportunities based on casework experience;,
  • You're flexible, enthusiastic, and open to the challenges of work in a community legal centre;
  • You know a little, or a lot, about consumer law, and you're keen to learn more;
  • You have the ability to communicate in plain language and to provide succinct legal advice to consumers by telephone;
  • You have the ability to work independently and remotely (due to the coronavirus pandemic).

We are looking for an experienced solicitor with at least 5 years post admission experience. You must hold or be eligible to hold a current Victorian practising certificate.

You must have demonstrable experience providing legal services to persons experiencing vulnerability and disadvantage.

This is a fixed term position for one year based at our offices in Melbourne CBD. (Note: at the time of advertising our offices are closed and all staff are working remotely until further notice).

The salary offered will be between $90,000 – $95,000 per annum, depending on experience, plus superannuation. Consumer Action Law Centre offers fringe benefit salary packaging to employees, so depending on individual financial circumstances the value of the salary may be equivalent to $5,000 - $7,500 higher.
