Advocare is an independent, community-based, not-for-profit organisation supporting and protecting the rights of older people in Western Australia. Our services are confidential, free and unbiased.

We empower older people by giving them information and choice so they can make informed decisions and can live the life they want on their terms.

Our services are centred around:

  • Protecting the rights of older people
  • Preventing Elder Abuse
  • Overcoming social isolation
  • Assisting with navigating aged care

We are a proud member of the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN).

Our Board

Our voluntary board consists of seven people who come from a wide range of professional backgrounds. We maintain our governance expertise and sustainability in seeking out new board members who have governance experience and qualifications (Australian Institute of Company Directors, Governance Institute of Australia or similar).

Board vacancies

We are seeking [two new] Board Members with expertise in the following area(s):

  • Accounting and Finance
  • Investment, Business Development and Social Enterprise
  • Cybersecurity
  • Board Governance Skills
  • Risk Management
  • Strategic Planning
  • Familiarisation of and commitment to the Reconciliation journey.
  • Knowledge of the community services/aged care sector (desirable)

A willingness to chair the Advocare Executive Finance Committee would also be highly regarded.

Selection criteria for board members

  • Sound understanding of governance (governance qualification and experience highly regarded)
  • Independence (no employment or governance roles with aged care organisations)
  • Understanding of elder abuse and issues affecting older people
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Preparedness and capacity to dedicate the time required to support Advocare as a Board member
  • In possession of a current Director Identification Number as issued by the Australian Government, Australian Business Registry Services

Previous experience in governance in not for profit organisations will be highly regarded, as would applications from individuals from diverse backgrounds, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Remuneration and Meeting requirements

  • We are based at The Perron Centre, Suite 4/61 Kitchener Avenue, Victoria Park, Western Australia 6100
  • 10 monthly meetings per year
  • Approximately 10 hours of commitment per month
  • This position is unpaid, with the exception of the payment of out of pocket expenses incurred by an authorised Member on behalf of the Association.
