Advocacy for Inclusion - Incorporating People with Disabilities ACT
  • Non-Ongoing

About AFI

Advocacy for Inclusion (AFI) provides independent individual, self and systemic advocacy for people with disabilities. We are a Disabled Peoples Organisation (DPO) which means most of our board, members and staff are people with disabilities. We represent all people with disabilities nationally from the ACT in our policy work.

Advocacy for Inclusion works within a human rights framework and acknowledges the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and is signed onto the ACT Human Rights Act 2004.

We are a peak body for policy representing people with disability to government, media and the community. We work to ensure our policy output is of a high standard, credible and impactful and has an advocacy goal.

The opportunity

This position is ideal for someone with experience in and a passion for policy analysis and advocacy that will improve the lives of people living experiencing disadvantage.

AFI are developing a white paper series which will consist of policy positions, a backgrounder, supporting lived experience stories and an evidence base explaining and articulating our policy positions on key matters. These are brief public facing documents that will sit on top of a range of other work in the organisation. They will be front facing advocacy materials and also provide a policy resource within AFI and externally.

This position will support the work of the policy team in a discrete policy task within the writing team developing these papers over a 5 week and then provide a handback to the team so that the work can be updated and refreshed in future.

Specifically, you will help us build the evidence base section of these papers – identifying and gathering evidence, data and research and synthesising them for the papers.

The role involves sourcing, synthesising and analysing relevant literature, data and other material with a close emphasis on data sources which explore the wellbeing of people with disability.

There is also a knowledge transfer role and towards the end of the evidence base project, the Policy Advisor will also provide a tutorial for the policy team to help members identify, utilise and work with primary and secondary data sources.

Detailed content and policy knowledge of the disability rights sector is not needed however a familiar with data sources like ABS, AIHW, SPRC, AHURI, the ROGS and a familiarity with social policy literature and the work of policy schools and think tanks would be useful.

This role will report to the Head of Policy as part of the Policy Team.

AFI makes every effort to provide a flexible work environment, allowing substantial employee control of their working hours, among other benefits.

This is a time limited non ongoing position equivalent to five weeks full time work (with the option of splitting the position out over further weeks in a part time capacity).
