POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Aboriginal Carbon Foundation (AbCF) catalyses life-changing, community prosperity, through carbon farming. Our aim is to build wealth for Traditional Owners and non-Aboriginal carbon farmers, implementing carbon projects that demonstrate environmental, social and cultural core benefits, through the ethical trade of carbon credits.

We operate on the cutting edge of ideas and community-based solutions. We bring together people with fresh ways of working, professional experience and a desire to achieve outcomes that tackle Indigenous poverty and climate change through a strengths-based approach. With a strong culture of innovation and collaboration, the AbCF supports carbon farming projects and connects communities who supply carbon credits, with organisations seeking to offset their carbon pollution.

  • To create a platform for Aboriginal participation in the carbon industry and markets.
  • Be a lead agency for the promotion, development and implementation of carbon projects that benefit Traditional Landowners and Aboriginal Corporations nationally.
  • Create the opportunity for the Traditional Landowners and Aboriginal people generally to actively participate in the carbon industry and economy.
  • Progress the case for Traditional Landowners to lead and control carbon opportunities into the future.
  • Provide leadership and support to regional organisations in the development and promotion of the Indigenous carbon industry.

Our Board of directors bring a range of expertise in several the following skill areas:

  • Indigenous Corporate Governance experience - Indigenous governance recognises what makes our culture unique: our beliefs system, knowledge holders and our laws and rules for our society. Indigenous governance combines cultural governance with corporate governance. AICD director’s qualification would be desirable.
  • Aboriginal Cultural knowledge and Land Management – Applications from Rangers are welcomed.
  • Research and Development
  • Conservation and Land Management
  • National and International Trade
  • Finance & accounting skills - An Australian Financial Services License would be an advantage.
  • Industry knowledge – experience in similar organisations would be useful.
  • Being a Not-for-Profit Board there is an expectation that Board members will assist in stakeholder relationship development and the promotion of funding opportunities.

Being on the Aboriginal Carbon Foundation Board requires a minimum time commitment of 2-4 hours per month:

  • Preparing for and attending, in person or virtually, a 2-hour board meeting per quarter.
  • Preparing for and attending, in person or virtually, one 2-hour subcommittee meeting each quarter.
  • Preparing for and attending, in person, a one-day retreat once every year.
  • Generally promoting the organisation and its Charter by attending meetings, forums and workshops representing the Board.
  • Engaging in urgent governance matters that may present from time to time.

Desirable specialist skills and experience:

The Board is currently looking for new Directors with one or more of the specific skills identified below;

  • Human Resource Management
  • Legal & risk management skills – a legal qualification would be an advantage.
  • Media and Marketing – consumer marketing
  • Fundraising/Philanthropic - experience in Non-profit operations including development of Annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, personal solicitation of major gifts, capital campaign planning.

A nominal meeting stipend is provided for each meeting ($400 in person full day meetings $200 half day zoom meetings) in addition to travel costs for in-person meetings.
