Rudd is listening: 50,000 new green jobs and apprenticeships for Australia

Last week we asked readers of this blog and people on our jobseeker email list to email PM Kevin Rudd and tell him that while he may want young people to be "reasonable", and not to seek out their "dream jobs", we want an economy where all the jobs are "dream jobs". While we surely haven't been the only ones saying this, the great news is that PM Rudd has listened and responded to community demands, announcing a plan to create 50,000 green jobs and apprenticeships at the ALP conference over the weekend. . . .

So the federal government thinks that young people should be "realistic" and "practical" when looking for a job, rather than pursuing their dreams and finding a job that they really love (and one that makes a real difference!). According to Kevin Rudd, "It is important for all of us to be practical in terms of the jobs that are available in the economy." But why should young people have to be realistic? . . .

Green jobs make workers feel safer during downturn

The NY Times' Green Inc blog is reporting that an international survey of workers in green jobs shows that government action on climate change is giving them increased job security. According to the first Carbon Salary Survey by Reuters, 68 per cent of "green workers" said an increased response to climate issues among governments and businesses had increased their sense of job security . . .
