Support the development and delivery of environmental legislation and regulations

We are building an inclusive workplace to help realise the potential of our employees, embrace our differences, and apply our diverse thinking to innovation and delivering services to Victorian communities. All jobs can be worked flexibly and we encourage job applications from Aboriginal people, people with disabilities, young people and people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) has an exciting opportunity to work in a Legal team with new leadership.

The Solicitor, Legislation, reports to the Managing Principal Solicitor, Legislation and supports the broader Legislation Unit in developing legislation, including leading and supporting a range of legislation projects of varying complexity.

The Legislation Unit in the Legal Services Division leads and coordinates DELWP’s bills and regulations programs, working in partnership with policy areas to develop quality, fit for purpose legislation to deliver government’s policy agendas.

The successful candidate will be a lawyer (either holding or eligible to hold an Australian practicing certificate) with knowledge and experience in supporting the development of legislation and regulations. Experience in providing legal advice on any of the following areas of law would also be highly regarded but is not essential: administrative law, planning and environment, Crown land use and development, natural resource management, emergency management, energy, building and local government.

As you juggle a variety of different policy areas, you will be interacting with and supporting a broad range of our internal operational stakeholders. Your stakeholder management skills will be well developed as you will be providing legal advice. Your highly-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills will be utilised as you navigate complex issues, conversations, expectations and the general demands and priorities of the role.

The team requires a legal professional who can hit the road running, however, supervision, support and guidance is provided to you. You bring a great deal of energy, initiative and passion for these areas of law which has been demonstrated in your previous roles. As you draft and review legislation and regulations your analytical and written communication skills will be required.

Your work style naturally lends itself to contributing to an inclusive and team-oriented workplace culture that is collaborative, professional and engaged. You want to be a part of a high performing team that you have contributed to, and this includes the broader Legal and Governance department. There will be opportunities from time to time to support the other Legal teams.

This role will suit a person who comes to work, rolls up their sleeves and is happy to respond to the work that comes in on their desk and adaptable to the team’s needs.  We won’t shy away from saying we need hard working, flexible lawyers who can roll with the ebb and flow of the workload and have volumes of emotional intelligence as you interact with your colleagues.  Given the workload that we are anticipating in 2019 and onwards, we also expect our staff to self-manage their work/life balance and know how to pace themselves.

If you want to contribute to an exciting, interesting and busy legislative agenda that supports the Victorian environment, we welcome your application.

This is an ongoing position.

To be considered for this position, your application should include a supporting statement demonstrating that you meet the key selection criteria and any job requirements specified in the position description.
