About Whitelion

Whitelion is a non-profit community organisation that supports and empowers young people to reach their full potential.

What is YAAP?

YAAP is a unique voluntary program for young people (16-24) who are passionate about social change and getting young people’s voices heard. Over the year YAAP participants (YAAPers) take part in developing a campaign, attending camps, attending Whitelion events and much more.

The goal of YAAP is for young people to develop leadership and advocacy skills and create social connections between a diverse group of young people. YAAPers are provided with many opportunities to share their ideas and stories with a range of stakeholders within the organisation and community.

What we are looking for in a YAAPer:

  • Passion for social change
  • Interest in supporting Whitelion to become a youth-led organisation
  • Interest/experience in campaigning
  • Good communication and team work skills (or willingness to develop these skills)
  • Ability to work with visual arts
  • Organisational skills
  • Ability/ interest in learning to facilitate small groups
  • Ability to use social media and information gathering
  • Willingness to attend two camps (May and September)
  • Willingness to participate in training opportunities
  • Commitment to meet with group for at least 3 hours a fortnight (DAY & TIME TBC)

What is involved?

  • Attend fortnightly workshops* held at the Whitelion office in West Melbourne
  • Attend two camps run by Whitelion (Leadership Camp and National Camp)
  • Participate in training opportunities and community events
  • Create and deliver a campaign as a team
  • Participate in consultation and co-design opportunities and projects related to Whitelion
  • Develop personal goals

*YAAP workshops in 2019 will be scheduled in consultation with participants. In 2018, workshops ran fortnightly on a Thursday from 4:30pm to 7:30pm.
