VMIAC is the peak Victorian non-government organisation for people with lived experience of mental health or emotional issues. VMIAC engages in a number of activities, including information provision, peer support and self-help. VMIAC provides individual, group and systemic advocacy along with research and evaluation, education and training.

To provide information on the National Disability Scheme review and appeals process and advocate for VMIAC consumers and consumer groups who have a lived experience with mental illness, enabling them to make their own choices and have their rights and interests respected. In particular, working in a varied rural and metro capacity which will include the development of resources for distribution. It will include looking at options to work with the clinical mental health sector to communicate with potential NDIS participants.   

The funded Project Activity includes access information to supportive services, and advocacy as captured under the following headings; 

  • Assist applicants to self-advocate where possible, or provide individual advocacy support;
  • Assist consumers seeking review of National Disability Insurance Agency [NDIS] decisions via the Administrative Appeals Tribunal [AAT] process. This may include supporting preparation of an application and on occasion attending hearings or consented referral to the Central Assessment Provider [CAP].  
  • Follow NDIS Appeals programme guidelines; 
  • Identify access to language services to ensure cultural and linguistic diversity is not a barrier;
  • Complete project reporting requirements.
