The newly elected MP for Brunswick, Tim Read, is seeking a part-time (4 days per week) Community Engagement Advisor to join his team. Tim is a passionate local member and wants to form a staff team that can help him best represent the community and achieve outcomes on their issues of concern. As Community Engagement Advisor you will coordinate Tim’s local campaigns, events and activities, and respond to constituent enquiries and requests for support.

Key responsibilities:

  • Identify opportunities and develop and implement strategic local campaigns that support the Member’s work in the community.
  • Lead community engagement and organising through liaising with local community groups and stakeholders, and coordinating events and visibility activities.
  • Recruit, manage, train and support volunteers to get involved in Tim’s campaigns and office activities.
  • Respond to in-person and digital constituent enquiries and requests for support.
  • General office administration, including helping manage Tim’s diary, constituent correspondence, phone enquiries, mail outs and contact database management.
  • Other duties as required.

You have tact and judgement in dealing with people from a wide range of backgrounds and are keen to support community members.

You have the ability to liaise with a diverse range of people and personalities, and to establish and maintain positive relationships both internally and with external stakeholders. You have a proven ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines and get the job done. You have an ability to maintain strict confidence on all issues associated with your duties and exercise sound judgment.

Key selection criteria:

Essential:

  • Experience in community campaigning, networking and managing stakeholder relationships
  • Community organising and volunteer recruitment and management experience
  • Experience organising successful events and activities
  • Highly developed written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities, work well under pressure, and meet tight and demanding deadlines
  • High level of computer skills, including email, spreadsheets, database packages such as Nation Builder, and social media

Desirable:

  • An understanding of the Brunswick area.


Terms of appointment:

Tim Read is recruiting a Community Engagement Advisor under the terms and conditions of an Electorate Officer at 4 days (30.4 hrs) per week, for his office in Brunswick East. The position is an ongoing role. Family-friendly hours are available, however some out-of-hours work will be required.

Electorate Officers are employees of the Victorian Parliament, directly accountable to the Member in whose electorate they are employed. Electorate Officers have a main role in supporting the Member, a position which requires a high degree of loyalty, versatility and the ability to maintain confidentiality on behalf of the Member and those who contact the office.

Salary: $73,382 - $83,899 (pro rata) plus superannuation. This is Grade 2.1 – 2.8, depending on PoV experience, on Parliament of Victoria’s Electorate Officer Salary Scale.
