About the role

An exciting role now exists for a Mission Cafe Lead to help build a new kind of community hub, within a reimagined retail store, where The Salvation Army mission is expressed and extended: caring for people, creating faith pathways, building healthy communities, working for justice.

Working with the local community, we are building a completely new Family Store and Cafe where people will come together and connect to:

  • Find ways to make Wagga thrive, through diverse community activities and social ventures
  • Help people and planet, by recycling and selling generous donations
  • Create new opportunities for spiritual exploration.

The Mission Cafe Lead is responsible for ensuring the profitable operation of the café inside the store and for supporting community activities. This role will report into the Mission Coordinator and function as second-in-command.

Cafe Operations: (60% of role)

  • Induction and ongoing training of up to 8 cafe volunteers to make coffee and serve food
  • Scheduling shifts and assigning tasks for volunteers; coordinating staff meetings
  • Opening and closing duties – including handling monies and balancing the register
  • Ensuring consistent delivery of an exceptional customer experience; managing any customer complaints or issues
  • Designing menu and guiding pricing decisions
  • Ordering and restocking supplies
  • Managing maintenance of equipment (e.g. coffee machines)
  • Ensuring adherence to health standards & WHS requirements
  • Business reporting.

Support Mission Coordinator to foster community and connection: (40% of role)

  • Proactively speaking with visitors about activities and events in the cafe and spiritual zones, and connecting community members to each other, where there are shared interests or opportunities to collaborate on local issues
  • Informally directing visitors to the relevant part of the store or to specialist community and social services which are available in the community hub
  • Spiritual oversight of the café: engaging visitors in conversations and assisting them to explore faith pathways, by being a listening ear or praying with people
  • Capable of stepping into Mission Director role when required, with oversight of community hub, retail, cafe and spiritual zones.

About you

  • A commitment to the Christian faith and mission of The Salvation Army
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in café management
  • Safe food handling qualification
  • Barista qualification
  • Strong appetite to be involved in the local community
  • Self-motivated, high level of initiative and strong work ethic
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills
  • Ability to interact and network positively with a variety of people
  • Ability to prioritise tasks and manage time effectively
  • Ability to delegate
  • Team player, flexible with a positive attitude
