The Position

The Community Liaison (CL) is the main point of contact for the public, and uses their role to contribute to the building of relationships with constituents and community groups, to help address their concerns and engage them in the work of the Leader and the Greens. The CL is part of a four person Operations Team that ensures the efficient and effective running of the Leader’s Electorate Office.

The CL assumes management of the Leader’s in-coming and out-going correspondence: coordinating, analysing, drafting and reviewing responses to the Leader’s correspondence to ensure that information provided is timely, accurate and consistent.

The CL liaises with the Leader’s Policy Team and Senior Management Team to ensure the quality and consistency of correspondence responses provided, so that all issues are addressed, information is factual, accurate, timely and succinct, and the language and tone used is appropriate.

The CL will manage the Leader’s Electorate Office reception service, as well as administration services, such as the ongoing maintenance of office filing systems, technology, stationery and general office supplies, and will provide other general administrative duties as directed by the ORHM and Chief of Staff.

The position will be based in Melbourne and require occasional travel to Canberra.

Pay and Conditions

The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984, and employment conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Collective Agreement 2016–2019. In addition to the salary, a generous employer-sponsored superannuation of 15.4% of the base salary is offered.

The position offered is full-time at an Electorate Officer A classification ($68,482.00 per annum), with an additional Electorate Staff Allowance (ESA) of $8,061.00 for a total per annum salary of $76,543.00.

The position is full-time, however full-time and part-time applications are welcome.

This is an ongoing position; however, all Leader’s Office positions are open to restructure and redundancy following an election or change of leadership.

All employees are expected to sign a confidentiality and code of conduct agreement prior to the commencement of their employment. A probationary period of 3 months will apply, with the option of extending this probation period by a maximum of 2 months.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Manage the Leader’s incoming and outgoing electronic and hard copy correspondence.
  2. Be the main point of contact for people contacting the Leader’s office across all of the Leader’s communication platforms, and help facilitate and build engagement between the public and the work of the Leader, the Greens and the Leader’s Office.
  3. Liaise with other Australian Greens’ Office Managers and staff about administrative and correspondence issues across the Greens parliamentary Offices.
  4. Assist with Leader’s Office administrative operations and data collection and reporting, including emerging voter, correspondence, media and constituent issues and trends.
  5. Support the functions of the Leader’s Office’s Policy & Parliament Team from time-to-time as required.
  6. Other duties as directed by the Operations & Human Resources Manager or Director of Policy & Operations.

Selection Criteria

  1. Excellent written and oral communication skills, with strong attention to detail.
  2. Strong organisation, prioritisation and time management skills.
  3. Excellent computer skills in word processing, database packages and internet and email programs, preferably Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and Outlook) and fast, accurate typing.
  4. Commitment to Greens policies and values, with an understanding of the contemporary political environment and issues.
  5. Friendly and welcoming personality with the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with a broad cross-section of individuals, stakeholders and organisations.
  6. Ability to confidentially handle contentious, controversial and emotive issues.
