We are looking for a General Manager to lead the Camperdown site for Pocket City Farms. This is a pivotal role leading all strategic and operational elements of the site, managing staff and liaising with a variety of stakeholder groups. This is an exciting time to join Pocket City Farms in a key leadership role, taking the Camperdown site to its next phase of growth while being a part of an ambitious strategy to improve the reach and impact of Pocket City Farms. The General Manager role is responsible for operations, finance and strategic development of Pocket City Farms, Camperdown. This is includes managing all financial and administration matters, managing on-site staff, liaising with volunteers and community groups, generating revenue and managing bookings of on-site facilities.

This unique opportunity to work as part of our team on an urban farm in the middle of the city working flexible hours Monday to Friday with occasional weekend work. The successful applicant will be working with four direct reports (Farm Manager, Farm Assistant, Community Coordinator, and Retail Coordinator) and the on-site partners, a restaurant and the club lease holder.

A keen interest in local food systems and the role of urban agriculture is essential, as is previous management experience leading an organisation at this level. The successful applicant will be someone who is excited to manage all operational aspects of the site, lead a small team, engage with volunteers, not afraid to get stuck into a huge variety of tasks, and be an advocate for environmental and ethical changes in our food supply chain.

The General Manager will report to the Board and the position includes:

  • Financial Management: build and maintain a financial strategy for a sustainable enterprise, run annual budgeting, maintain accurate accounts, produce reporting and analysis and manage all payments (e.g. payroll, payments to third parties).
  • Governance and Reporting: Identify and implement all relevant governance requirements to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, by-laws and maintain the highest ethical standards in the organisaton. Reporting to Board of Directors, volunteers and stakeholder groups.
  • Site and Staff Management: oversee a small team of staff, volunteers, overall responsibility for the site including safety of those using it and visitors. Point of contact for all discussions and working arrangements with on-site partners.
  • Event Management: Manage all space hire for the on-site shared spaces, working with the community coordinator, develop a pipeline of events that are aligned with the strategic direction of Pocket City Farms that are financially sustainable and serve all target areas of the broader community.
  • Stakeholder and Community Engagement: Develop and maintain strong relationships with key collaborative stakeholders, including statutory bodies, city councils, landowners, funding bodies, philanthropic donors, not-for-profit partners and the community.

Successful applicants will have:

  • A demonstrated passion for food security, urban sustainability and community development, with experience working or volunteering in one of these areas.
  • A background in not-for-profit or business management.
  • A strong capability for financial management, revenue raising and securing funding.
  • Creative and forward thinking, and the ability to adapt to new opportunities and situations.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a willingness to collaborate and the ability to build good relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal skills and confidence in public speaking.
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills.

The job requires 40 hours per week, including some weekend work, with an anticipated starting date of February 2018. As this work involves time working with children, a working with children check will be required.

About Pocket City Farms

Pocket City Farms (PCF) is a not-for-profit incorporated association established in 2012 and run by a board of eight skilled individuals, who are motivated and passionate about urban farming and sustainability. PCF are working to bring urban farms to Sydney’s unused spaces.

Local sustainable food production close to where the bulk of our population live, is integral in securing a healthy future for our communities and our planet. Our model of farming is multidimensional – whilst growing fresh, local, organic and healthy food is at the heart of what we do, we are also aiming to make a significant impact through education and community building.

In 2016 we opened our first farm on the previously unused bowling greens at Camperdown Bowling Club. The farm is a part of Camperdown Commons - a community revitalisation project developed by Camperdown Project Pty Ltd in collaboration with PCF.

The Camperdown farm has become a productive hub the local community can gather to learn about all things farming and food growing, buy local, organically-grown produce and take part in many workshops and events. The bowling greens have been converted into 1200m2 of market garden using organic practices to grow vegetables, herbs and salad greens. A greenhouse grows seedlings for the market garden and for sale to the public, and a 16 m compost unit has been established for composting local food waste. The farm is a community-oriented social enterprise and open to the public as a demonstrative showcase of urban farming.

Our farm is located at Mallett St, Camperdown in Sydney’s Inner West. It is two minutes walk from Parramatta Rd. and a 10 minute walk from Newtown train station and King St.
