Lighthouse Foundation is currently seeking to employ a Therapeutic Youth Worker respite to work in Lighthouse homes across Melbourne. 

Lighthouse Foundation offers an integrated model of therapeutic care for homeless young people who come predominantly from a background of long term neglect and abuse. In a Lighthouse home children, young people and families are supported by live-in Carers as well as specialist services including case management and psychological support. 

The main purpose of this position is case work support, home management, supervision of children, young people and families and to act as a positive role model for the young people living in the home. This can be a demanding, yet rewarding position where you get to be part of a system that brings change to a young persons life.     

The position is supported by a Senior Care team, and the multi-disciplinary clinical team based at the Youth Resource and Administration centre in Richmond.

To be successful in this role, you must:

  • Be willing to invest yourself into the role of a carer and form healthy, professional attachments with young people.
  • Be open to the support and challenges of working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Be open to being challenged and able to consider views opposing your own.
  • Hold a qualification in welfare, family therapy, social work, psychology, youth work, relevant Certificate IV or another strongly related discipline (essential) in accordance with the Minimum Qualification Strategy for Residential Care Workers in Victoria. You must also have completed or be willing to complete four days of "top up units" prior to beginning work – please see attachment for a list of relevant qualifications and the mandatory top up units required.
  • Have a knowledge of attachment and trauma informed practice.
  • An ability, and willingness, to embrace the Lighthouse therapeutic family model of care, creating and maintaining a family environment for young people from at risk backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate commitment to personal and professional development.
  • Have experience with conflict resolution and mediation.
  • Have sound knowledge and skills for assessment to identify suicide/self harm risks and strategies to manage same.
  • Hold a clinical response skills to youth based crisis situations including practical and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Be able to stay calm and rational in volatile situations.
  • Be able to work with young people, and knowledge of the special needs of homeless and at risk young people.
